A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course is run at Willingdon Community School and trains candidates in KS3 & 4.

Candidates will be on a 50% timetable with initially 3 days in school and 2 days at Brighton University and from mid-November they will be full time in school.

Candidates will be regularly watched by their mentor to ensure that they are succeeding on the course.

There will be a second, contrasting placement at a school which is mutually agreed.

Interview process

Candidates will be required to teach a small group of students for approximately 20 minutes, to judge their aptitude to teach. This will be followed by a formal interview.

How school placements work

The age range of students is 11 to 16 years

There will be an opportunity to gain experience of KS5

The candidate will have a total of two placements

The second placement is approx 6 weeks

The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £22,000
  • a bursary of £20,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Qualifications

Candidates must have 5 or more GCSEs in Grades A* to C (or equivalent), including Mathematics and English, and a higher level honours degree in Mathematics.

Personal qualities

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a passion for their subject and a genuine commitment to working with and relating to young people of all abilities and needs. Candidates need to be well organised, conscientious and willing to get involved in the life of the school as a whole. They need to be creative, innovative and interested in all aspects of their subject. The capacity to develop the skills and knowledge required to be a good teacher are essential but it also helps if you have a good sense of humour and are good at working with others.
