About the course
This programme is designed to ensure that you meet the standards to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the additional PGCE qualification, and provides you with insights into teaching beyond the Teacher standards.
Across the partnership, the aim is to produce effective practitioners who will make a positive contribution to the teaching profession. By the end of the programme, you should be able to demonstrate appropriate professional attributes, have a strong subject and pedagogical knowledge, and be able to plan and teach effectively to ensure that all pupils make progress.
How to Apply
All applicants will need to apply through the UCAS website. If you are interested in applying for a position within Forest Learning Alliance, then ensure that you use our name, or Uplands Primary School, within your programme search.
Successful applicants will be offered an interview at one of our schools where they will:
- be interviewed by a Headteacher and a school representative
- be observed working with a group of children
- complete an oral presentation on a topic of their choice
Following success at interview, a School Direct placement will be offered within one of our partner schools.
How school placements work
All School Direct trainee teachers will be spend the majority of their training in one school with regular training sessions either at the lead school, Uplands Primary, one of the partnership schools or at the University of Reading. The individual placement schools have taken responsibility for deciding individual trainees teaching commitment but the partnership agreement in place ensures that all trainee teachers gain the same range of experience, whatever the school.
In addition to their main placement school all trainee teachers will undertake a second placement in the spring term for five weeks.
All trainee teachers will gain experience across a range of key stages and contexts and this experience will be tailored to meet the needs of individual trainee teachers to ensure that all gain the range of expertise needed to become an effective professional.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You’ll get a bursary of £6,000 if you have:
- a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject
- at least grade B in maths A-level (or an equivalent)
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.
Financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
We would normally expect you to have a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). You will also need to have achieved at least a Grade B in A Level Maths plus Grade 4 (or C) or above in GCSE Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (or equivalent qualifications).
You will also be required to pass the QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy.

- work with others to promote the learning and welfare of young people;
- adopt a reflective and critical stance towards their own practice, policy initiatives and listen to and act upon advice;

About the training provider
Uplands Primary School is the lead school for Forest Learning Alliance, working with Primary and Special Schools within our local area to provide School Direct fee funded and salaried placements across Bracknell Forest, Wokingham and beyond. We work in partnership with the University of Reading who have an exceptional reputation in teacher training. As an Alliance we provide high quality provision to ensure a well-rounded training programme, with a clear emphasis on mentorship throughout.
Who are we looking for?
For both salaried and training places we are looking for inspirational people who have a proven track record of good communication skills, the ability to use their initiative and ability to work under pressure in a demanding environment.
School Direct (salaried) is aimed at graduate career changers who have three or more years’ work experience. This year successful applicants have proven at the point of application and also at interview, that they have the necessary skills and understanding of the role of the teacher to be able to train as teachers whilst working in a school environment.
School Direct (fee paying) route is also a school based route into initial teacher training but applicants often do not have as much experience working in schools, leading classes and taking responsibility for teaching on a regular basis.
