Professional Policy & Practice in Education
Sessions in this module aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject or phase, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject or phase. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subjects or phases.
Practitioner Research in Education
The module enables you to choose an area on your School Development Plan and study this in more depth through a research project based in your school.
The interview will be conducted at the school where your school experience will take place. The day will begin with a tour of the school followed by candidates observing a lesson in the subject area they are interviewing for. The Bexley Teaching School Alliance lead will then meet candidates and explain the following process.
The interview consists of an 40 minute English test followed by a student panel interaction in which students will ask candidates a variety of questions. If candidates successfully pass this stage of the interview process they will be asked to deliver a 5 minute presentation to the panel regarding an outstanding lesson they have observed during their school experience days, this is then followed by interview questions. At the end of the interview, candidates are free to leave and the panel will deliberate. The Bexley Teaching School Alliance aims to let candidates know the outcome of the interview the same or following day. As this is a modular programme, our university partner may well invite candidates for at interview before making a final offer. This will be communicated to potential trainee teachers directly from the university.
How school placements work
School Based (School Direct) is a delivered in partnership with schools. The key feature of this course is that the majority of the year is spent on placement working alongside experienced colleagues in schools.
The course aims to harness the knowledge and experience of school colleagues in the delivery of courses, working in partnership with the experience of accredited ITT providers such as universities. schools, and the mentors within them, provide the vast majority of the training.
The majority of the learning on this course happens in schools. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience.
There are 15 days taught in university at the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of lecture and seminar and workshop activity.
There is a high level of individual support for learning offered in this course through the mentors in school and the university tutors.
If you are studying on the School Based (School Direct) (salaried) programme you will be employed and paid a salary by your school. The salary rates will vary depending upon the location of your school and what you are training to teach. You will be paid on the unqualified teacher pay scale
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
A good honours degree of at least lower second class (2:2) standard with at least some of the degree modules related to the training subject.
English and Maths at GCSE (grade C or above) or equivalent for Secondary (11-18).

About the training provider
The Bexley Teaching School Alliance (BTSA) consists of a diverse range of partners, including primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and two universities. We work collaboratively with schools in Bexley, Kent and to share outstanding practice, provide training and CPD, drive school improvement and train new teachers. We welcome all schools to join our alliance.
School Direct is a route into teaching which moves the focus of study from a university based programme to a school based programme with university input.
Whether you’ve just finished a degree, or have been working in a career for many years (education based or otherwise), the School Direct route enables you to learn to teach, whilst actually doing the job, maximizing the time spent in school.
We are looking to recruit graduates to begin training in primary and secondary schools across Bexley. We work closely in partnership with UCL, Institute of Education, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University to provide School Direct Tuition Fee and School Direct Salaried routes into teaching.
