About the course
History, according to the current national curriculum, "should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past". Our aim is to equip students to do just that, developing their ability to plan meaningful historical experiences for pupils in the 11–16 age range, to teach effectively and to assess their own and their pupils’ achievements.
The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two subject-related Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.
Students spend most of their time (120) days in schools, working with history mentors who support them through two school placements. We are fortunate to have a good choice of schools to work with, within our regions inside the London Orbital Motorway (M25). The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.
The interview will be conducted at the school where your school experience will take place. The day will begin with a tour of the school followed by candidates observing a lesson in the subject area they are interviewing for. The Bexley Teaching School Alliance lead will then meet candidates and explain the following process.
The interview consists of an 40 minute English test followed by a student panel interaction in which students will ask candidates a variety of questions. If candidates successfully pass this stage of the interview process they will be asked to deliver a 5 minute presentation to the panel regarding an outstanding lesson they have observed during their school experience days, this is then followed by interview questions. At the end of the interview, candidates are free to leave and the panel will deliberate. The Bexley Teaching School Alliance aims to let candidates know the outcome of the interview the same or following day. As this is a modular programme, our university partner may well invite candidates for an interview before making a final offer. This will be communicated to potential trainee teachers directly from the university.
How school placements work
School Direct (tuition fee) programmes allow you to learn on the job as you work towards your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recommendation. This programme will allow you to train in a home school setting followed by a second school placement and an alternative placement for 2 weeks E.g. a SEN School. Although your training is based in a school, they’re not your employers, and in many ways your training will be similar to training programmes in universities and colleges
The training programmes will build your confidence and subject knowledge and give you the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner. Throughout the year, you will be supported by a highly-trained mentor who will hold weekly meetings to review your progress and set targets. As your confidence grows, you will deliver parts of lessons on your own, taking on more responsibility until you are teaching full lessons. As part of your further development you will undertake one other main placement at another school, usually in a different context to your ‘home’ school. There will also be the opportunity to spend a varying amount of time at other schools to further enhance your learning through experiencing a diverse range of educational settings. Our placement strategy is aimed at giving you the best preparation possible for a successful teaching career.

You’ll get a bursary of £12,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.

Financial support from the training provider
Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on a fee based teacher training course in England that leads to the award of QTS.
Availability is dependent on the highest relevant academic award and the ITT subject. To receive a bursary or scholarship trainees must be entitled to the student finance England criteria as either a home or EU student. www.gov.uk/student-finance/new-fulltime-students

Bursaries are available for History up to £12,000
A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard with at least 50% History content.
GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C/ 5 or above.
Applicants who do not offer a GCSE in English Language or Mathematics may demonstrate an equivalent standard by completing either the Mathematics Foundation, Mathematics Higher or English from www.equivalencytesting.com and achieving at least a grade 5.
We do not accept "applied" or "additional" GCSE subjects.
We want you to have passion and enthusiasm. We need trainees who can engage and inspire students to a love of learning, who are:
*committed to championing their students;
*open to learn about children’s physical/social/emotional/cognitive needs and how these can affect behavior;
*in good health with the ability to cope with stress. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it also requires an element of resilience!
*professional and committed to equal opportunities;
*able to communicate well in written/spoken English, with at least basic computer skills and commitment to developing these.
*have a sense of humor and an ability to laugh at yourself.
At least two weeks work experience in a primary school is desirable so that you can reflect on what you have learnt in your personal statement.
A realistic understanding of both the role of a teacher and some current issues facing the profession is important.

The Bexley Teaching School Alliance (BTSA) consists of a diverse range of partners, including primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and two universities. We work collaboratively with schools in Bexley, Kent and to share outstanding practice, provide training and CPD, drive school improvement and train new teachers. We welcome all schools to join our alliance.
School Direct is a route into teaching which moves the focus of study from a university based programme to a school based programme with university input.
Whether you’ve just finished a degree, or have been working in a career for many years (education based or otherwise), the School Direct route enables you to learn to teach, whilst actually doing the job, maximizing the time spent in school.
We are looking to recruit graduates to begin training in primary and secondary schools across Bexley. We work closely in partnership with UCL, Institute of Education, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University to provide School Direct Tuition Fee and School Direct Salaried routes into teaching.
