About the course
The salaried school direct training programme will build develop your own teaching style, subject knowledge and confidence, giving you the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner. Throughout the year, you will be supported by a highly-trained mentor who will hold weekly meetings to review your progress and set targets. As your confidence grows, you will deliver parts of lessons on your own, taking on more responsibility until you are teaching full lessons. As part of your further development you will undertake one other main placement at another school, usually in a different context to your ‘home’ school. There will also be the opportunity to spend a varying amount of time at other schools to further enhance your learning through experiencing a diverse range of educational settings. Our placement strategy is aimed at giving you the best preparation possible for a successful teaching career.
- A degree classification of 2:1 honours degree or higher.
*GCSE’s at a grade C or above for English, Mathematics and Science. (In recent terms a 5-8).
*At least two weeks work experience in a primary school is desirable so that you can reflect on what you have learnt in your personal statement.
*The skills tests need to be passed before the programme commences.
*3 Years career experience in any field, gained during or after your degree is desirable.
- DBS clearance and other necessary employment checks will be carried out before the course begins.
You will be welcomed by the leader of the Bexley Teaching School Alliance and given necessary information for the day.
The process begins with a thirty minute mathematics test and a forty minute English test. There will be a short break and then you will be asked to complete a pupil interaction lasting 12 minutes with a group of 6 pupils. The panel will deliberate as candidates have a comfort break and if candidates successfully pass this stage of the interview process they will continue to part two. This begins with a five minute presentation to the panel regarding an outstanding lesson the candidate has observed during their experience days in school. Finally the candidate will be asked a range of interview questions.
Candidates are then free to leave and the panel will deliberate and make a final decision. We aim to inform all candidates of the final outcome the same day.
How school placements work
Before interview candidates will have selected a host school where they wish to train. Salaried students are employed by their host school and spend the majority of time there throughout the training year. Students will have one contrasting placement lasting 6 weeks in an alliance school within Bexley and this takes place in the spring term. The BTSA arranges all placements and will let the students know in due course where they will be training. Throughout the year, students will have set days where they are required to attend university and there is a professional studies programme that runs alongside the days attended at university. Students will begin the programme by observing and working with groups of pupils with the support of their mentor in school. Weekly mentor meetings will take place and as the student progresses through the training year their timetable of teaching will begin to grow. Each student will be assigned a university link tutor who will visit them five times throughout the placements to observe, support and give constructive feedback. In addition to this the Bexley Teaching School Alliance are another layer of support for all the students and can be called upon anytime during the training year. Students will be expected to collect evidence against all the teaching standards throughout the year and will have university assignments to complete. At the end of the summer term, the university link tutor will conduct a joint observation alongside the school mentor and a decision will be made as to whether the student teacher has met the teaching standards.
Trainee Teachers will be paid on Unqualified Teacher 1 salary.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
*a degree qualification from the UK (or equivalent). 2:1 or higher desirable.
*at least 2 weeks work experience in a school, within the last 2 years. This is crucial to success at shortlisting and interview.
*GCSE English and Maths Grade C (5-8) or above (and Science if you are applying for a Primary place).
*Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.
*Occupational screening check.
*Entitlement to work in the UK.
If you are applying for a School Direct (salaried) place, at least 3 years (or equivalent) work experience is desirable.
The BTSA are looking for candidates who have passion and enthusiasm. We need trainees who can engage and inspire students to a love of learning, who are:
*committed to championing their students;
*open to learn about children’s physical/social/emotional/cognitive needs and how these can affect behavior;
*in good health with the ability to cope with stress. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it also requires an element of resilience!
*professional and committed to equal opportunities;
*able to communicate well in written/spoken English, with at least basic computer skills and commitment to developing these.
A realistic understanding of both the role of a teacher and some current issues facing the profession is important. It can really help to spend a couple of days observing relevant lessons in a state primary to strengthen your application but this is not a strict requirement in itself.

The Bexley Teaching School Alliance (BTSA) consists of a diverse range of partners, including primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and two universities. We work collaboratively with schools in Bexley, Kent and to share outstanding practice, provide training and CPD, drive school improvement and train new teachers. We welcome all schools to join our alliance.
School Direct is a route into teaching which moves the focus of study from a university based programme to a school based programme with university input.
Whether you’ve just finished a degree, or have been working in a career for many years (education based or otherwise), the School Direct route enables you to learn to teach, whilst actually doing the job, maximizing the time spent in school.
We are looking to recruit graduates to begin training in primary and secondary schools across Bexley. We work closely in partnership with UCL, Institute of Education, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University to provide School Direct Tuition Fee and School Direct Salaried routes into teaching.
