About the course

You will be trained in the craft of teaching in a highly supportive environment where you will be supported to develop the professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of outstanding teaching and learning.

Most of your training will be delivered by expert teachers in a school environment. You will generally spend four days per week at your placement A school and one day per week will be dedicated to study time and professional and curriculum studies arranged by KMT - giving you the opportunity to share your learning with trainees from other schools. You will have the support of tutors from Kent & Medway Training. Your tutor will also visit you in your school setting to offer guidance and advice.

You will be assigned two mentors – one will be classroom based and the other will be a member of the school’s Professional Mentor team. All of our mentors are experienced practitioners who have also undertaken training programmes to develop their mentoring and coaching skills.

You will also complete a six week teaching placement in another local contrasting school.

You will be assessed through formal lesson observations, your evidence portfolio, research projects and a progress tracker measured against the teaching standards.

Interview process

Mascalls School is the lead school in the partnership and will coordinate the recruitment process.

Applicants who are selected for interview will spend a full day at the school. During the day interviewees will be observed teaching a 20 minute lesson to a group of pupils, will complete literacy, numeracy and primary knowledge tests and have a formal interview. You will be informed in advance about the content of the lesson, the age group and the abilities of the pupils you will be teaching. Opportunities will be provided for you to meet experienced teachers from your key stage and other trainee teachers. A representative from KMT will be involved throughout the day and the selection decision will be a joint decision between Mascalls School and KMT.
