About the course
As a trainee with St John Vianney (Lead school) you will be training in one of the 30 primary schools in Hartlepool under the Together to Succeed Alliance.
As a School Direct trainee with Durham University’s PGCE Course, you will follow their comprehensive academic programme which will provide you with an excellent range of teaching and learning strategies and a broad curriculum knowledge.
Both Core and all Foundation subjects are studied in depth and you are given the opportunity to put this learning into practice both with the university and on school placement. The academic programme is coupled with extensive time in school, with experience gained in a variety of settings and contexts.
As a trainee with St John Vianney, you will spend every Thursday and Friday either: at St John Vianney's taking part in seminars or class based activities, your placement school or on an Enhancement focus day looking at English as an Additional Language (EAL), Early Years or Special Educational Needs (SEN)
In addition to your weekly days in school, you will complete block placements throughout the year. Your Preliminary placement will be in two blocks: one of four weeks and a second of three weeks. These will take place before and after Christmas.
Your main teaching placement will begin around Easter, in an alternate school, and will last for ten weeks. This placement will provide you with experience in the alternative key stage and in a contrasting location/catchment area.
All of our schools in our alliance are experienced in hosting trainees and will be able to support your needs. Class mentors are trained and continued support provided by St John Vianney leadership staff. In fact, there is a designated member of staff at St John Vianney who has the role and responsibility for the training and development of ITT students. So you can be assured that this personalised support will address your needs and provide any necessary coaching, advice and guidance throughout the year.
As part of the course, in Partnership with Durham University, will be expected to submit assignments relating to your learning and development. These three submissions are at Masters level. These submissions are assessed by University tutors and staff. The University Progress board will also make the final recommendation for QTS at the end of the course.
If your application is successful, we will invite you to attend a Selection day at St John Vianney.
You will be interviewed by the Head Teacher, John Hardy or another Headteacher from the alliance. A representative from Durham University will also be in attendance.
As part of the selection process, you will be asked to spend the morning in a classroom working alongside the teacher and any support staff. Feedback will be provided to the interview panel about your conduct in the classroom, focusing on your interaction with the children.
As part of the interview you will be asked to do a five minute presentation, the subject will be provided in advance. A serious of formal questions will follow.
How school placements work
Your school placements will take place in two of our alliance of 30 primary schools.
Our alliance of schools ranged from small rural schools to schools with mixed aged classes to large primary schools with two form entry. We have schools in our alliance with very different catchment areas as well as faith schools and academies.
Our designated member of staff makes sure when assigning placements that you are given an experience in very different school settings as well as closely matching class mentors to trainee needs.
As a trainee with St John Vianney, you will have placements in two schools. One will be in a Key Stage 1 class and the other will be in Key Stage 2. We will always try to place you based on your preferences, although this may also depend on your prior experience and how you need to be supported. We make every effort to support travel arrangements and we consider this when making placement decisions.

You will need to have GCSEs, or equivalent, in maths, English and Science, at grade C or above.
You will also need to have at least a 2.1 degree in a suitable subject. In exceptional circumstances, we will consider applicants with a 2.2.
In our trainees, we are looking for self-motivated, enthusiastic individuals who are resilient and show perseverance and determination.
You must be able to demonstrate the drive to make a positive impact on the children in schools.
Prior experience with children is desirable but not essential.
In line with Durham University’s safeguarding guidelines, you will be expected to complete a ‘fit to teach’ assessment and you will require a clear, enhanced DBS certificate.
