How school placements work
Placement schools are selected for candidates following a careful process of working with local head teachers to establish where are best subject specialist mentors are placed across the borough and what school recruitment needs are likely to be in the future.
Richmond Borough is a small locality and all schools within the partnership have excellent local transport links.
The Alliance has teaching opportunities in the full secondary range from 11-19. If you have placement in school which is currently 11-16 you will be given the opportunity for KS5 experience at another school.
There are 10 schools in the Alliance and Schools Direct trainees will have one main placement and one second placement across the year.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Certified evidence of an undergraduate degree conferred by a United Kingdom higher education institution or an equivalent qualification.
Degree classification of 2:1, 2:2 may be considered if the applicant can show considerable school experience
- GCSEs at Grace C or above including Maths and English plus Science or GCSE PE.
All applicants must pass the Department for Education's Literacy and Numeracy Skills tests prior to commencing the course.
About the training provider
Richmond Teaching Schools Alliance is great place to work and learn. We will provide a supportive and tailored learning opportunity in partnership with Roehampton, King's College London and St Mary's Univeristy.
Our vision for RTSA is that staff and students feel valued and enjoy teaching and learning across the borough of Richmond Upon Thames. We are very proud of the partnerships we have with all schools in the borough, from our long established secondary schools to the newer free schools and our successful faith schools.
RTSA is lead by Waldegrave School which OfSTED reported is an outstanding school. Waledgrave was awarded comprehensive school of the year in 2016 by the Sunday Times. Prior to that we were the top 11-16 school in the country in the Sunday Times Parent power tables. Our results show that we are in the top 10% of schools nationally each year.
Orleans Park School, another outstanding school in the borough, is our Strategic Lead school. We work closely with all our Alliance schools to provide the best placements in fantastic departments with excellent outcomes for students. Schools Direct trainees will have access to great subject specialists and dedicated mentors as well as a full training programme through our universities and partnership schools.
About the accredited body
Alliance schools have worked successfully with St Mary's Schools Direct programmes since their inception. Teaching students at St Mary's have one of the highest employment ratings in the UK. 100% of trainees from the 2016 degree were employed as teachers within six months - many in our partnership schools.
St Mary's is a popular university for Schools Direct applications because of its excellent reputation in educational research and the location of its campus in Twickenham which makes travel to and from local Alliance schools easy.
Training with disabilities and other needs
RTSA welcomes applications from candidates with disabilities or additional needs.
Applicants who would benefit from disabled access should let us know on their application so they can be considered for placement at appropriate schools.
