QTS
QTS (qualified teacher status) allows you to teach in state schools in England.
It may also allow you to teach in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. You should check with the institution you’d like to teach in for confirmation. The status of QTS in these countries may change after the UK leaves the EU. Please check GOV.UK for updates.
To teach in the rest of the UK or internationally, you may wish to consider a ‘PGCE (or PGDE) with QTS’ qualification instead.

About the course
The Chemistry School Direct teacher training programme at Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School allows student teachers to train on the job in a supportive and well organised environment. We pride ourselves on our personalised professional development programme which will enable you to develop your strengths as a leader in the classroom.
We work together with Christchurch University to offer Qualified Teacher Status with the option of an add-on PGCE qualification (Post Graduate Certificate of Education).
You will spend the majority of your time at Simon Langton Girls' School. A contrasting secondary school placement will be organised for a 6 week period, a primary school for 5 days and you will spend 15 study days at Christchurch University.
Interview process
Potential applicants should apply through UCAS from October 2019.
Interviews will be held at Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School for the post of School Direct: Chemistry
How school placements work
Your main base school will be Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School, where you will spend the majority of your time training on the job.
A 6 week alternative school placement will be organised for you during your training year. This is to provide a contrast to your experience so far at Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School. You will also complete 5 days in a primary school to aid your knowledge of the prior key stage which can also be organised by the school.
As we work with a range of schools in our partnership, it is very easy to organise a placement for you in a contrasting environment.
Fees
This fee is based on the figure for 2019-2020 and will be updated once the information for 2020-2021 has been released. Bursaries are available subject to eligibility.
Financial support
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Chemistry or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.
Find out how to apply for a scholarship. You don’t need to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility for bursaries and how you’ll be paid.
