About the course
MTSA works closely with CCCU to deliver training that combines strong theoretical knowledge and understanding of learning, teaching, pedagogy and child development with substantial experience of the school environment and practice of teaching in the classroom.
You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional and subject knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for engaging children and young people in creative, purposeful and challenging learning.
During your course you will undertake placements in two contrasting schools within the Alliance. Through these placements you will gain experience in working within differing settings and with children of differing abilities,needs and socio-economic backgrounds. This will ensure you have a broad experience and understanding of education within the geographical location of Medway. You will also have access to Post 16 learners during at least one of your two placements. As a result of the outstanding Special Schools within our Alliance, we are able to offer every trainee at least a short placement in a special school environment.
You will also have full access to CCCU's facilities and support. You will be assigned a mentor within each placement who will support your development and be involved in target setting and grading as well as being a point of contact for you.
As a Teaching School Alliance we develop and deliver an exciting programme of CPD, including conferences, research projects and seminars, guest speakers, collaborative workshops, all of which trainees are able to access.
From the outset you will be treated as a member of staff within your placement school and be offered the opportunities afforded to the teaching staff, such as staff meetings and INSET opportunities.
The MTSA co-ordinate the recruitment/interview process on behalf of all the schools within the Alliance. Interviews are conducted with representatives from our partner schools.
The interview process will involve attendance at a half day selection event during which you will take part in a variety of activities, including a literacy and numeracy test, interviews on key focus areas, leading a student activity, a subject knowledge interview (for secondary candidates) and other activities.
It is a rigorous and thorough process, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available and to assess the key skills, knowledge and attributes needed to be a successful teacher. During the interview process there will be an opportunity to talk to students and staff from a range of MTSA schools.
How school placements work
Trainee Teachers will be based in a placement school for the whole of the academic year, with opportunity to complete a contrasting placement in the Spring for 4-6 weeks. You will also be given opportunity to experience excellent teaching and learning across the full range of Key Stages and in range of types of school.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Based on 2018/19 figures the course fees for completing a QTS accreditation with us are £5960. For an unsalaried post this will need to be self funded, whereas a salaried position will see this cost paid by the host school. Some subjects do attract bursaries and scholarships. In all cases an additional £3290 can be paid by the candidate in order to register for accreditation in a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £22,000
- a bursary of £20,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support from the training provider
To join a School Direct programme you must be a graduate, preferably with a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1). We are willing to consider applicants with a 2:2 who can demonstrate a true aptitude for teaching and have previous experience to draw upon.
Secondary candidates in adddition to their degree should have the minimum requirement of GCSE 4/C grade or above in English and Maths. Primary candidates should have the minimum requirement of GCSE 4/C grade or above in English, Maths and Science.

The university will complete a DBS check before commencement of the programme.

About the training provider
The MTSA are looking for ambitious and inspiration trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about learning. We will offer a challenging, creative and rigorous training programme led by a team of experienced teachers and school leaders.
For 2017/18 we achieved 100% pass rate, with 73% achieving Grade 1 (outstanding teacher) and 27% Grade 2. 63% of these trainees secured NQT jobs within Medway Schools and 30% within Kent Schools.

We are experienced providers of initial teacher training, having been at the forefront of School Direct since its inception, as well as hosting extensive PGCE placements.
