About the course
As a school based provider of Primary initial teacher training, the CTSN SCITT is very much grounded in the life of its local schools. All the tutors on the course are expert, practising teachers able to guide trainees into a thorough understanding of all aspects of the primary curriculum, and appropriate pedagogy, informed by both research and the tutors’ own practice.
At the start of the course, trainees spend three days a week in their placement school and attend core training for the other two; as the course develops, four days a week are spent in school with one day in core training. Part of this time in school is salaried; for the remainder of the week the training is accelerated so that the training will be completed in a single academic year, but this additional training is not salaried.
Whilst in school, trainees carry out specific teaching tasks, which will increase throughout the year, but also have plenty of time to get involved in other training activities: observing experienced teachers; working with children in smaller groups, or in one-to-one tutoring; time for assessment and planning; reading, writing and research into effective learning and teaching.
Every trainee has a mentor (usually the class teacher) with whom teaching and other tasks are planned and evaluated at weekly mentor meetings; these meetings are the hub of the school based training. In addition, each trainee is assigned to one of the senior tutor team and each trainee also has a personal tutor. This provides a strong support network for the trainee throughout the course.

At interview you will usually be asked to teach a key stage one or key stage two class for around 20-30 minutes - you will be advised of the year group prior to interview. In addition there will be a short written task and an interview with a SCITT Senior Tutor, together with a senior teacher from one of our partnership schools. The employing school (ie the one that will pay your salary) would also need to interview you; this could be arranged on the same interview day or, if necessary, on an alternative date.
How school placements work
We have excellent relationships with a wide range of good and outstanding schools, across the Eastern region, which gives us considerable flexibility in placing trainees in local schools, within reach from their home address. You will spend the first and third terms in your 'home' school, and are placed in a contrasting school for part of the spring term.
Throughout this full time training course, you are employed by a school, part time, for the ten months. The training is accelerated so that you are able to complete the course within one year. The additional training required for this is not salaried.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You would need a minimum of a 2.2 Honours Degree (or overseas equivalent confirmed by NARIC UK). Also, you would need to have GCSE qualifications (grade C/4 or better) in Mathematics, English and Science, or a confirmed equivalent qualification.
As a school based ITT provider, CTSN SCITT works very closely with its partnership schools, and the vast majority of our trainees get jobs working in these local schools. We are looking for creative, proactive, positive applicants who share our commitment that children in our local schools should have the best possible teachers, and a desire and determination to make this commitment a reality.
About the training provider
The Cambridge and Suffolk Schools Alliance (CASSA) is an alliance of primary, secondary and special schools and post-16 providers from across Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.
We work with over 80 partner schools in both rural and city contexts and we have an excellent track record of successfully training teachers. These schools have rich experience of working with some of the country’s leading Higher Education Institution (HEI) and SCITT (School Centre for Initial Teacher Training) providers. Each year the overwhelmingly majority of these trainees go on to work in local primary and secondary schools.
CASSA ITTs (Initial Trainee Teachers) have access to the highest quality training.
CASSA works in partnership with both Cambridge Teaching School Network SCITT and Suffolk & Norfolk SCITT and offers both salaried and non salaried primary and secondary routes. We have professional studies training centres in Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich; this local training provision, and being placed in one of over 80 schools, gives ITTs the ability to train close to home and manage competing demands. This flexibility and the quality of training means that our trainees qualify at the highest levels and start their careers ‘school ready’.
Training with disabilities and other needs
CASSA supports all trainees based on their individual needs. Recently this has included those with dyslexia, physical, hearing and visual impairments and mental health conditions. Plans are developed with trainees to ensure that they can fully access in centre training, operate effectively on school placement and complete written assignments.
CASSA has full disabled access as do all the schools in the partnership. However, applicants who would benefit from disabled access should let us know on their application so that they can be considered for placements at the most appropriate schools.
