About the course
Redhill School/Stourbridge Teaching School Alliance (STSA) offers training to both primary and secondary applicants. We work with two providers: University of Worcester and Haybridge SCITT (accredited through Birmingham City University). In both cases, candidates spend the majority of their time in schools within the STSA. For their subject specialist training and their higher education study, trainees will attend the appropriate provider which will be either Worcester University or Haybridge SCITT.
Secondary Training: during their school direct training, all trainees will receive support from both their subject mentor and professional mentor. The subject mentor will provide subject specific support, including access to the latest teaching and learning strategies in order to become a confident teacher. Our professional studies programme is delivered by the professional mentors and is designed around current pedagogy. It also incorporates visits to other schools as well as guest speakers to enhance your understanding of contemporary practice.
Trainees will spend up to 70 days in their main school (autumn and summer term) and up to 35 days in their second placement (spring term). Autumn term in their main school will consist of observing lessons and working collaboratively with other teachers and they will eventually teach independently by October half term. Teaching allocations will be increased gradually over the autumn term and by spring and summer terms, trainees will be ready to teach more classes. Alongside their teaching commitments, trainees will also spend approximately 45 days at university where they will receive expert training in their subject specialisms as well as supplementary professional studies sessions and other enhancement activities. There will be three assignments plus a presentation that assess a candidate’s subject and pedagogical knowledge and which form part of the PGCE Secondary offer. For their higher education based training, applicants through University of Worcester will attend sessions at the Worcester campus; applicants through Haybridge will attend Haybridge/Birmingham City University.
Trainees will spend up to 23 weeks in their base school (autumn and summer terms) and up to 8 weeks in their second placement (spring term). In addition to this, they will also spend up to 7 weeks either at university or on enhanced placements. One day per week will be devoted to professional studies which will take place either at university or in school. For their PGCE accreditation, trainees will have to complete 2 assignments plus a presentation.
Applications through Worcester University: upon application, potential trainees will be informed of their host school, and the interview will take place at this school. For interview, applicants are asked to deliver a short presentation and teach a 20-30 minute lesson to a group of pupils. There will be two interviews: a short, informal subject knowledge interview (usually with the Head of Department in secondary schools or Phase Leader in primary schools) and a formal interview which will cover aspects of the teaching profession. There will also be a written task based on a lesson you will observe, and, in some cases, a numeracy task.
Applications through Haybridge: the process will be similar to the process for Worcester, but the numeracy task is compulsory.
How school placements work
There are several schools within the Alliance (see our web-site for further details) and candidates are usually allocated according to capacity and need. In all cases, the candidate’s own circumstances will be considered so that travel times are not inconvenient. All our schools are mainly in the Dudley Borough and at secondary level they are predominantly 11-16 intake. You will spend the autumn and summer terms at your host school and the spring term in your second placement.
Applicants through University of Worcester or Haybridge will be allocated through the same process.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Secondary: You will have attained a degree in your subject area and GCSE to grade C or above in both English and Mathematics. We will consider other relevant and related degrees providing the necessary Subject Knowledge Enhancement Programme is completed.
Primary: in addition to a relevant degree, you will also need GCSE to grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science.
For both secondary and primary courses, you will need to pass the compulsory skills tests in literacy and numeracy.

You will be supported all the way, but we also want you to be independent, a critical thinker, reflective and self-aware. You will also need to be a confident communicator who will contribute to a great team spirit.
Full criminal/DBS checks will be carried out upon application.
Successful completion of literacy and numeracy skills tests is also compulsory.
Trainees without the relevant degree may well be expected to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

About the accredited body
We work closely with Haybridge SCITT in ensuring our trainees receive an outstanding experience. Applying to train at Redhill through Haybridge is no different to any other process other than you will receive your professional studies training at Haybridge and not at Redhill.
