About the course
Do you want to make history come alive for young people? Our history course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you in this quest and enable you to become a teacher who can make a real difference to the lives of pupils, ensuring they have a meaningful and engaging experience of history during their time at school.
During the course, you will examine how pupils engage with the past and how we work with them as teachers to analyse, interpret, evaluate and contextualise events and historical sources.
We will explore with you a range of different approaches and activities used in history classrooms, investigating the range of approaches and methods that can be used to assess pupils' understanding and how we can use this to inform future teaching and learning.
You will be invited to an interview with one of the Rutland Teaching Alliance partner schools as part of the selection process. At this interview, you will have an opportunity to take part in a number of school-based activities during a normal school day.
They will include:
*An opportunity to meet with the subject Team Leader and other colleagues
*Teach part of a lesson to a small group
You will also be invited to a second interview at Nottingham Trent University.
How school placements work
The lead school organises your placements within the teaching alliance.
The School Direct course is a flexible approach to teacher training. The majority of your time will be spent in the school, training in the classroom and being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. On Monday's you will also spend time studying at the University.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You’ll get a bursary of £12,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.

Financial support from the training provider
As a School Direct trainee, you will be entitled to the same financial support as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses.
If you are a UK or EU trainee, you should be eligible for a student loan, maintenance loan and maintenance grant to cover the cost of your study and will only start paying the loans back when you start earning over £21,000 per annum.
You may be eligible to receive a training bursary, dependent on the subject you train for and a degree classification.
*A good UK honours degree or equivalent, at a minimum 2.2 with at least 50% focused on subject areas that are very closely related to the subject that you wish to teach.
*GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) in English Language and Maths
*A levels (or equivalent) in the subject you intend to specialise in.
*Skills test in Numeracy and Literacy must be completed before starting the course.
Following the interview, strong candidates who are not able to demonstrate graduate level knowledge in the subject they wish to teach may be offered a place on the course subject to successfully completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in the subject prior to commencing your teacher-training year.

The Rutland Teaching Alliance is a partnership of outstanding providers ranging from Primary Schools through to Higher Education Institutes. Our shared vision is to raise the achievement of all students within Rutland and to respond effectively to the professional needs of staff locally and within the surrounding counties.
Our Alliance brings together a wealth of experience and expertise at all levels including those of National Leaders in Education and we work in close partnership with Nottingham Trent University through our successful School Direct scheme.
Over the last 5 years, 100% of Rutland Teaching Alliance trainees* have been in employment contracts as NQTs by the end of the course and 98% of trainees starting the training gained QTS in the last 3 years (National figure 90%).

About the accredited body
At the University you will study for the same award as other postgraduate teacher trainees except that the delivery will have more emphasis on being trained within a school environment and will involve more staff from schools:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (with 60 credit points at Masters level)
- Professional Certificate in Education.
Successful completion of the course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a postgraduate qualification.
You will be a registered student with NTU, which means that you will benefit from the combined expertise of the University and lead placement school.
