About the course
As an RTSA School Direct trainee you will be trained in a highly aspirational environment by outstanding practitioners. Our training programme will enable you to develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to become an effective classroom practitioner and potential future leader.
We believe firmly in supporting the development of all of our staff and we pride ourselves on the quality of our training programmes and the level of support we are able to offer both our trainee teachers and existing staff. The feedback from our School Direct trainees is consistently excellent year on year and many of our trainees seek to work within the alliance after graduating. The lead school is a well-established outstanding academy and the Redhill Academy Trust was recognised recently by the DfE as one of the top ten most effective MATs in England.
The practical element of your training will take place within one of our alliance schools and is then enhanced through regular attendance at the University where you will enjoy full access to all of their facilities and expertise. Regular free training sessions are available to our trainees through the RTSA training programme alongside our specially designed programme of support specifically for our School Direct trainees.
You will be assigned to one of our partner schools from September and will take on the role of a fully integrated member of staff from the first day of the new academic year. You will be assigned a mentor from amongst the faculty staff of your designated school who will support your training. Mentors are carefully selected based on their level of expertise and capacity to support our trainees and they undertake rigorous training prior to commencing mentoring. You will also have the support of the School Direct Co-ordinator and your training will be closely monitored throughout by our Director of Teaching School.
Modern Foreign Languages placements for 2019-20 are likely to be at Redhill Academy (French and/or German), Hall Park (German and/or French), Bolsover School (French and/or German) and Oakwood Academy (French and/or Spanish). You may express a preference for a specific school but we cannot promise to meet your request.
This course leads to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. This gives you up to 60 Masters level credits and a recommendation for QTS. A Masters qualification can then be completed by undertaking subsequent assessed research.
The Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Admissions Team conduct an initial eligibility check, to determine whether you meet the application criteria. Once this is complete, both the University and the lead school will then consider your application, and agree whether to invite you to interview.
Applicants selected for interview are always sent subsequent information about the interview process by e-mail.
The interview process itself takes place at two separate assessment centres, one at NTU and one at The Redhill Academy (or a partner school which is offering a placement in your subject). The ultimate decision whether to make an offer of a placement is made jointly by NTU and the Director of Teaching School. The result of your application and interview will be communicated formally through the UCAS system by the University’s Admissions Team and the Director of Teaching School will always phone on the day of the interview with initial feedback.
School based interviews will normally take place over a single morning or afternoon. The interview typically includes a tour of the school with students, delivery of a 25 minute observed teaching activity and a 30 minute formal interview with the Director of Teaching School and a lead teacher (in the subject area under consideration) from one of the alliance schools offering a placement in that subject.
Prospective interviewees are given full details of the venue, timings and teaching activity (including content/topic, age and ability of students and available equipment) at least two days prior to interview.
How school placements work
With over 20 partner schools offering placements we are able to offer a real diversity of experience and setting to our trainees. We do take into consideration both practical and geographical logistics when placing our trainees in individual schools. Trainees may state a preference for a particular school at interview but whilst we will always consider requests we cannot unfortunately guarantee to match a trainee up to a particular school.
Trainees spend all but the first half of the spring term in their main placement school. The second placement during the spring term gives the trainee opportunity to experience a different setting and school environment. We also provide opportunity for trainees to spend two days in a primary school and a day at Oak Field Special School to inform their general awareness of the different phases of the education system. Our trainees genuinely appreciate these opportunities. Trainees will gain teaching experience in KS3 and KS4 and where possible in KS5 also. All our trainees are given regular feedback on their teaching and formally observed a minimum of 13 times but most benefit from continuous observation and feedback and we ensure that all trainees have weekly meetings with their mentors to ensure they are fully supported and progress carefully monitored. Most of our schools also offer regular lunchtime drop-in sessions with ITT Co-ordinators. The Director of Teaching School and university tutors quality assure the training process at key points and help assess the progress of the trainee.
There is a genuine ethos of partnership across our alliance as we come together very regularly through our CPD and training programmes and networks. Being part of a relatively large cohort of trainees is a key benefit recognised by all of our trainees and mentors. All RTSA staff, including our trainees, are able to access regular training sessions both in their own schools and through the RTSA, however we also have our own discrete School Direct Whole Cohort training sessions which allows our trainees to come together as a group on a regular basis to both further their training and to support each other.

Financial support from the training provider
Trainees on our School Direct course are charged £9,250 in tuition fees by Nottingham Trent University (NTU), the standard rate for postgraduate courses. Trainees are entitled to the same financial support as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses. Those from the UK or EU are eligible for student loans to cover tuition fees and maintenance. Bursaries are available from the National College for Teaching and Leadership in priority subject areas; the level of the bursary is dependent on your degree level and the subject you wish to teach. - A good UK honours degree or equivalent, preferably at a minimum 2:1 but strong candidates with a 2:2 will be considered.
- 50% of your degree must be related to the subject you wish to teach. If this is not the case you will need relevant qualifications (including A level in the subject) and/or experience which demonstrates graduate level understanding. Strong candidates who do not meet these requirements will be asked to complete a SKE course.
- GCSEs or equivalent (minimum grade 4) in English and Mathematics.
We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject area and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities. Ideally you will have already worked alongside young people (not necessarily in a paid capacity) and be able to demonstrate an ability to build positive relationships with children and colleagues. An awareness of current foci and issues in education would be beneficial. We are looking for trainee teachers who are willing to engage fully in every aspect of school life and relish the opportunities our training programme has to offer.
- Work experience is no longer a prerequisite for applications to School Direct training programmes, however any experience gained in schools will benefit both the interview process and training.
- You will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly known as a CRB check) and provide information relating to Childcare Disqualification regulations.
- You will need to pass the Government Professional Skills Tests. Please note that you need to have passed both tests by 24th July 2019 to secure a place with an RTSA school. NTU offer support with these tests where needed.
About the training provider
As an outstanding teaching school, heading an alliance of over 30 schools, including Primary, secondary and special schools, the Redhill Teaching School Alliance offers an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals to train to teach.
As a trainee with us you will be fully integrated into the the school, in which you are placed and made to feel like a fully-fledged member of staff. You will be encouraged to engage in all aspects of school life, including being a co-tutor, attending parents' evenings, staff meetings and CPD.
You will benefit from the expertise of specialist staff in your chosen curriculum area, mentoring and regular meetings with our ITT Co-ordinator. We have a bespoke CPD programme for alliance trainees and a large supportive cohort, who meet on a regular basis.
There are regular employment opportunities across the alliance for our successful trainees and many of our graduates go on to develop rewarding careers in teaching and leadership in our own and other schools. We have a rigorous, but supportive approach, which helps trainees apply effective teaching and learning methodology to their developing practice and pride ourselves on our excellent programme of training and support.
