Biology 3DCB

You will attend university training days at UCL Institute of Education alongside students recruited via other routes and other School Direct partnerships. On the Tuition Fee route you will carry out academic assignments leading to the award of masters level credits.

The Green School is proud of the reputation it has acquired in providing high quality, well-supported training places for secondary teachers for a variety of ITT providers across the years. We have six years’ experience of offering both the School Direct Training and Salaried Routes and witness daily, the benefits that being in a school from the start of the year bring. Our student teachers know they are being trained in an environment which injects confidence, supports and nurtures their development and both allows them to teach from an early stage of their journey and the time to reflect upon their practice. We aim to retain our trainees whenever possible and increasing numbers of our staff have now followed this route. A former trainee refers to “the openness of the staff, and the Christian ethos prevalent in the school” which enabled her to build a strong rapport with her classes, and secured her love of teaching. Others have referred to our “high demands” but “the professionalism and friendliness of the staff” and “ambiance of the lessons”. The Green School Trust gives trainees the option of basing their training at The Green School for Girls with additional experience at The Green School for Boys.

Interview process

We will invite selected candidates to an interview. The invitation letter will give full details of the interview. This is likely to be a classroom exercise, literacy test, and panel interview.

Interview

Applicants must bring the following to interview: their qualifications certificates; identity documents (photo id e.g. a passport, and evidence of residence e.g. a mobile phone bill or bank/savings statement); evidence of having taken the practice skills tests, or passed the actual skills tests. Overseas applicants must provide evidence of their eligibility to live and study in the UK

If we make you an offer, it could be conditional upon various things such as DBS clearance, passing the professional skills tests by a set date. You are entitled to wait for the outcome of all your applications before accepting an offer on UCAS and we fully endorse this

UCL carries out a second-stage review of all applicants who are referred after school interviews. If you are applying for a secondary specialism on the Tuition Fee route you will be invited to attend a UCL interview day with other applicants for that specialism.

How school placements work

Your tutor from the Institute of Education will visit you in school on a regular basis and liaise with your school mentor regarding your training and development. Your Institute tutor will carry out your final assessment in school against the national Teachers’ Standards.

From the beginning, you will be treated like a member of the teaching staff by fellow professionals. With your School Based Mentor (SBM), you will feel supported as you progress and become ready to teach as the placement progresses. Our mentors are experienced teachers and undertake rigorous training to develop their mentoring skills to support your development as a teacher. Your time in school provides you with the opportunity to develop your teaching expertise and relationships with young people in a familiar environment.

As a secondary trainee you will have the opportunity to teach a range of year groups between years 7 to 11. You will have experience of the new curriculum and assessment procedures.

Your second teaching placement is intended for you to apply and develop your teaching skills at a different setting whilst also widening your experience of the school system in a new context.

Qualifications

UCL requires a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree and GCSEs in English Language and Maths (for Secondary programmes) plus Science (for Primary programmes) at grade C/5 or above. UCL does not accept ‘additional’ or ‘applied’ GCSE subjects. For equivalency testing UCL will only accept tests from (www.equivalencytesting.com)

Other requirements

Prior to the course, it is a requirement that you undertake at least 10 days’ experience in the UK state secondary sector. Five of these days should be before you apply, to strengthen your application and to support interview answers. The lack of any observational experience in a UK state primary classroom is a common reason for rejection. These two weeks are an important and integral element of the course, providing you with the opportunity to observe a variety of teaching styles and to engage in some initial group and class teaching.

About the training provider

The St Marylebone School Teaching School Alliance was part of the first cohort of a hundred Teaching schools (http://teaching.stmarylebone.school/) and won this accolade largely due to a proven track record of training and outreach work. We are experienced in supporting successful trainees over a number of years on different training routes, for instance PGCE, Teach First, the Graduate Teacher Programme, School Direct Pilot and School Direct. Staff are eager to be involved in training and mentoring, many of them having themselves trained at St Marylebone School.

You will work with experienced teachers, first of all observing and team teaching, then teaching independently. This is complimented by a placement of about 6 weeks’ teaching in another school.

We have been successively rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and SIAMS and are one of the best performing non-selective state schools nationally.

We are based in in the fantastic location of Marylebone High Street with all the attractions of central London nearby and the benefits of excellent transport links. Nearest tube stations: Baker Street, Regents’ Park (both a 2-minute walk away). You will be able to develop your career in a beautiful school with excellent facilities and positive links with parents and the vibrant local community

We work with a big group alliance of school in central London and further afield. Often the six week second school placements are shared between alliance schools to ensure that trainees have a good experience.
