About the course
A Postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) is awarded to successful trainees at the end of the full School Direct Training year. This allows you to teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This qualification is also recognised internationally. Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.
The School Direct Programme course start date is 1st September and the end date in schools is the week commencing 1st July.
The Humber Teaching School provides an exceptionally high standard and varied compulsory CPD training programme throughout the training year. All CPD is delivered by outstanding teachers from across the Teaching School Alliance. At the start of the year trainees attend compulsory blocks of training at the HEI and subsequently attend the HEI once a week throughout the remainder of the School Direct training year.
Trainees work very closely with an institution/school-based mentor, have weekly meetings with this mentor and monitor personal progress against The Teachers’ Standards. The amount of time you spend teaching will gradually increase over the course of the year and is ‘bespoke,’ according to each trainee’s individual progression paths, confidence and prior classroom experience. Trainees will work towards teaching a 70% timetable by the end of the programme.
Secondary trainees will mainly work with a school-based mentor from within their specialist subject area and observe and teach lessons from both the mentor and host teachers within the faculty area. It is not a requirement for school-based mentors to be ‘subject specific’ mentor, as trainees will work closely with a number of faculty staff for subject knowledge development throughout the course, in addition to Humber teaching School compulsory CPD training sessions.
Primary applicants will decide to train in either 3-7 or 5-11 which will be covered across the two placement institutions and three teaching phases.
Once shortlisted by The Humber Teaching School, applicants will be invited to attend one interview with both The Humber Teaching School and partner HEI. The interview requires applicants to undertake a series of individual tasks. Applicants can expect to spend up to a full day on interview in the placement institution. The interview tasks include; an assessment of classroom proficiency and teaching potential through a taught lesson, a lesson observation of institution staff to assess an applicant’s reflection and evaluation skills, a formal panel interview and five minute subject specific presentation to the panel (Secondary applicants) and completion of written skills tests in numeracy and literacy (Primary applicants).
How school placements work
The School Direct training programme will occur in two institutions over the course of the year.
A key factor for Humber Teaching School applicants is that they can select their Phase One placement institution, which is returned to for the entirety of Phase Three. The Humber Teaching School decides the Phase Two ‘contrasting’ six week institution placement. Phase one is from September until after the February half term. Phase Two ends at Easter and trainees return to the Phase One institution for Phase Three, which continues until the end of the programme.

The minimum qualifications needed are:
- 2nd class degree or higher
- Applicants must have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 in the GCSE examinations in English, Mathematics (GCSE grade C or above)
Applicants must show enthusiasm and confidence for the subject, a commitment to teaching and possess a genuine desire to enhance the learning experiences of all young people. Applicants must have the ability to work effectively as a member of a team, show good interpersonal skills and have a sense of humour. Good communication and organisational skills are essential.
Please note that prior School-based experience is not a statutory requirement for applicants but such school-based experience is of course welcomed and encouraged.
About the training provider
The Humber Teaching School (HTS), School Direct (SD) Teacher Training Programme is a 'hands-on' and 'bespoke' programme. Trainees spend the majority of their training year in their placement schools ‘learning on the job’ from outstanding experienced classroom practitioners. A key feature of The Humber Teaching School’s SD programme is that applicants decide which institution they wish to undertake their training in, therefore all of Phase one and three are completed in the institution of the trainee’s choice. Trainees train in two contrasting institutions and SD places are offered across the full age range (from EYFS through to 16-19 experience in colleges). The Humber Teaching School is extremely proud of its 100% success rate, achieved consistently since 2011 when the Teaching School originated. All HTS trainees since this time, wishing to gain employment within the local area have done so. Many have gained employment within the Teaching School Alliance institutions. All placements through The Humber Teaching School are in outstanding and good local Primary and Secondary Schools.
