About the course
You will be based in a school four days a week from the start of term in September. Working alongside your subject mentor, you will identify your current level of knowledge, skills and experience and from that draw up a training plan. This will involve observing experienced teachers, other teaching experiences and training activities leading to delivering whole class.
Throughout the year you will have one day per week at the central training base in Heckmondwike (or visiting schools, colleges or other educational establishments). The programme is extremely diverse from theoretical input to observing Sensory Rooms in local Special Schools and Voice Projection workshops. Our trainees have also benefited from our Mindfulness and Yoga sessions to support their personal well-being.
You will also benefit from 10 additional Subject Specific Training days which will give you the opportunity to further enhance your subject knowledge with other subject specialist trainees.
By the end of the training year you will be fully equipped to deliver your subject from Year 7 pupils to Year 11 including the GCSE specification.
In order to gain Qualified Teach er Status (QTS) you have to be judged competent against the Teacher Standards
For Kirklees & Calderdale SCITT this involves:
• 3 Evidence Bundles (these are training activities which focus on a group of standards)
• 2 Assignments (these form the concluding part of the Evidence bundle)
• Tutor visit reports - your Tutor will visit you half-termly
• 3 Periodic Reports - your school will write a report at the end of each term
If you are selected for interview, you will be asked to prepare a task to bring to your interview and should expect to undertake a written task on the day.
You will be invited to an interview by a small panel comprising a Partnership tutor and a senior colleague from one of our partner schools.
You will be expected to answer a range of questions which are designed to explore your personal qualities and meeting the course criteria.
You will need to bring to interview original certificates of all qualifications and proof of identity.
You will be asked to complete a short exercise to demonstrate your ability to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English.
If you are successful at the partnership interview you will be offered a place.
If you accept, you will be recommended to a partner school as a prospective trainee.
When a school is confirmed as the host school you should expect to be interviewed by the school, following its recruitment and selection processes.
Before commencing the programme you will sign a contract between you, the host school and the Partnership.
You will have had a satisfactory criminal background check and all other requisite checks will be carried out.
Formal offers of SCITT places will be made by Kirklees & Calderdale SCITT and not by individual schools.
How school placements work
You will be placed in a school which we feel will fully support you in your subject specialism.
You are training to teach 11-16 age range but some of our schools do have 6th forms which obviously enhances your training opportunity.
You will spend most of the year in one school with a second experience in a contrasting school (usually Christmas to February half term).
We try to take into consideration the location of our trainees and their placement schools to assist in their daily commute.

We offer 2 options
£7500 for Qualified Teacher Status alone (QTS)
£9000 for QTS with PGCE. This PGCE element equates to 60 Masters credits which we offer through the University of Huddersfield.
You’ll get a bursary of £9,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.

All qualifications must be gained by the start of the course. We will consider applications from people who are finishing a qualification but any offer would be fully subject to the successful completion of relevant qualifications.
• GCSE Maths and English at least Grade C/4 or equivalent
• A UK Bachelors degree or equivalent
• A NARIC certificate for qualifications gained overseas
For Secondary, degrees are usually, though not exclusively, relevant to the subjects to be taught. We may request you undertake an SKE course to increase your subject knowledge.

You should demonstrate that you have recent experience working with primary or secondary-age children (relevant to the phase of your application)
Recent experience of your subject in a secondary school or of the National Curriculum in a primary school.
Before starting on the course you will be required to pass the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy.
You will also be subject to the following checks: health, identity, relevant work qualifications, right to work in the UK, professional registration, DBS check, references and a Childcare Disqualification and Disqualification by Association Declaration.

We are training the next generation of outstanding teachers for the Leeds area. Our current cohort of student teachers are training to teach in primary and secondary in both mainstream and special school settings.
We provide training and placements of the highest quality to deliver a truly bespoke training package. We are committed to helping you develop professionally, well beyond your initial teacher training and Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year by means of an extensive programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities – As an Appropriate Body for NQTs we offer our trainees a coherent two year programme of support.
You will have - GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics. If you are applying for our Primary programme, GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Science as well.
A degree from a UK or European Union Higher Education Institution or equivalent qualification, preferably a First Class Honours Degree or a 2.1. A 2.2 would be considered for applicants with additional experience, expertise or extenuating circumstances.
Experience of working with children or young people in the recent past; this may include experience leading the local Brownie pack, working as a Teaching Assistant or being employed as an unqualified teacher.
