About the course
In this School Direct Trainee position you will experience teaching Primary Education across age and ability ranges in a Primary phase school throughout an academic year. Your training will cover a range of curriculum areas with a focus on the key areas of numeracy and literacy.
We are looking for people who have the potential to become outstanding teachers and school leaders of the future. You should possess a genuine enthusiasm for education and be able to communicate your understanding to others. You should be committed to inclusive and comprehensive education and believe passionately in the difference education can make to young peoples’ lives. Experience of working with young people is not a requirement for entry on to the course, but would be an advantage.
Our School Direct programme contains elements delivered by the school, the Minster Teaching School Alliance and Nottingham Trent University. The programme includes both academic training and assessment as well as extensive classroom practice. School Direct delivers practical experience of theoretical approaches delivered by a range of partners.
The school and university work closely together to ensure that your progress on the course is closely supported and quality assured. You will be based in your host school throughout the year and attend university-based days with other School Direct trainees. These days are an opportunity to work with primary and secondary trainees and the sessions will form an integral part of the work you do in school.
In addition, there will also be regular opportunities to reflect and work with other trainees from across the Alliance through our School Direct programme. This will include working with trainees from primary and secondary phase settings, as well as some specific sessions focusing on key areas of development for your specific course.
In the second term you will undertake a placement in a second school for a period of five weeks. This is an opportunity to experience teaching within another Key Stage, learn within a different context and share your experiences with other trainees.
You will have a trained mentor assigned by the school and a University tutor who will work closely with you. From the beginning of the course, you will be regarded as a beginning teacher and will attend development and professional learning activities within your school.

Candidates who submit successful applications will attend an initial interview with Nottingham Trent University to assess their suitability for the course.
Following a successful university interview, candidates will then be invited to attend an interview at their host or lead school. This recruitment process will involve up to a day spent at the school and will include a number of activities designed to assess your aptitude and potential as well as giving you a chance to familiarise yourself with the school and programme:
• a welcome and introduction to the school
• a tour of the school
• an observed 15 minute student activity, (details provided in advance)
• a subject knowledge discussion and interview.
The criteria we will use at interview to decide whether or not we offer you a place on the course are:
- enthusiasm for working with young people
- a realistic and positive view of education and an awareness of current educational issues;
- clear reasons for wanting to teach at the level for which you have applied;
- an open, reflective and enquiring mind;
- motivation and commitment to teaching pupils of all levels of ability;
- an appropriate level of subject knowledge in your chosen subject for secondary applicants.

How school placements work
Throughout your year you will mostly be based in your host school, experiencing life as a full-time member of teaching staff.
You will undertake a 5 week long second placement at another school in the Spring Term, offering you a contrasting experience. In addition, you will attend training at schools around Nottinghamshire and can experience teaching in a different phase, as well as special school experience, if desired.
Your main host school for your training will be Abbey Primary School in Mansfield.
Abbey Primary School is a large Maintained Primary School with currently 470 pupils on roll, aged 3 to 11. It is a happy school where all people matter. Our ethos is simple: each and every child is special. Our mission is to provide the best possible education for each child by providing pupils with an outstanding curriculum, in a secure, happy, exciting and challenging environment.
Demographically speaking, we serve a mixed catchment and our pupils are most definitely the best thing about our school! Academically, our results are above the national at the end of the Foundation Stage, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.
Abbey Primary is a popular and oversubscribed school. We have our own Foundation 1. Abbey Primary School feeds into the Samworth Church Academy. Our most recent Ofsted, in November 2018, gave us a good grading across the board.
We are part of The Minster Teaching School Alliance and work closely with both this Alliance and other Mansfield schools to constantly improve and offer quality CPD opportunities. We possess several kite marks including Investors in Pupils, Artsmark Gold, the All Together Anti- Bullying Gold kite mark and the School Games Silver award.

Choosing to train here will ensure that you receive the highest quality CPD in readiness for a fulfilling career in teaching. We have successfully trained many students over the years, many of whom have since been appointed to work in school.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
All applicants are required to hold a UK degree or equivalent qualification, preferably at 1st or 2:1 level, although we will consider applications from those with a 2:2.
For secondary teaching, this must be in, or closely related to, your proposed teaching subject. As a guideline we would expect that at least 50% of your first degree is directly relevant to the National Curriculum subject you intend to teach. You should demonstrate the relevance of your degree through your application.
We require passes in English Language, Mathematics and science (for primary) at GCSE grade C+, or an approved equivalent qualification.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
For all initial teacher training courses, applicants must complete forms requesting an Enhanced Disclosure from the DBS. In addition you will be required to disclose previous offences.
Literacy and Numeracy Competence
All teachers are expected to be competent in Fundamental English and mathematics. By the end of ITT all trainees must be able to demonstrate competence in:
• Speaking and Listening
• Data and graphs
• Mathematical calculations
Your competence in these areas will be assessed by your university at application and throughout the course.
About the training provider
The Minster Teaching School Alliance (MTSA) is a large teaching school working with schools across Nottinghamshire. We work in partnership with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University and host a large number of School Direct students each year throughout the region across a range of phases and specialisms.
We have a very high completion rate and almost all of our trainees from previous years have secured permanent jobs in schools following their training year. Many of our trainees secure employment within their host school or the Alliance following their training.
In addition to the support that you will receive from your university and your host school, MTSA will provide support for you and your mentor, including:
- a programme of sessions throughout the year to support and complement practice that has been taught at university and in school
- specific additional training for key elements of phase-specific teaching, such as phonics or GCSE/A Level examinations
- the opportunity to link and work with School Direct students in other schools across both primary and secondary phases, which has proven to be a real network of support
- a second placement at a school in a contrasting context, with careful consideration of your transport and training needs
- additional support from our team throughout your training.
