About the course
This School Direct programme is a popular choice for those wanting to train on the job, have an immersive, practical experience and who hope to secure a role in the network of schools where they train. EborHope Teachers are based within one school for the majority of their training. There is also a 6-week contrasting placement within the spring term.
We work in partnership with York St John University to ensure that teaching in the classroom is underpinned with a rigorous academic understanding. Together we award a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 60 Masters level credits of professional development modules.
Academic sessions take place on a Wednesday afternoon and these sessions are either led by York St John or EborHope staff. You will be in school for the rest of the week. We use outstanding teachers within our schools to facilitate our sessions. These sessions aim to give you an academic understanding alongside pedagogical strategies to deploy in the classroom. You can then deploy these strategies in the classroom the next day as the majority of your time is spent at your base school. At EborHope, you are always treated as a member of staff and not a trainee teacher.
You will be supported by a school mentor as well as a link tutor who is based at York St John University, they will be in regular contact through informal visits and joint appraisals. There will also be a senior mentor at EborHope to guide you throughout your teaching career. This is a one year programme but the support will continue into your NQT year and beyond.
Selection is based on evidence given throughout the application process:
- Your personal statement
- Detailed breakdown of degree content
- Details of other academic, professional or vocational qualifications
- Completion of a practical task at interview
- Overall performance at interview
Interview days take place at Manor Church of England Academy. Typical activities include a short teaching activity and an individual interview with a panel made up of EborHope teaching school staff, University tutors and teachers from our partnership schools. Candidates may also have an interview with a pupil panel, take part in a group activity and literacy based task.
How school placements work
Our EborHope Teachers will undertake two placements during the year.
For the majority of the year, our EborHope Teachers will be in their base placement. The second school placement will be for 6 weeks during the Spring term.

There are no other costs for the programme.
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £22,000
- a bursary of £20,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support from the training provider
Financial support can be accessed through the Funding Advice Team at York St John University.
- You must have an A Level in the subject you wish to teach.
- You must be an honours graduate of an approved university or other institution granting equivalent qualifications acceptable both to York St John University and the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
- All applicants require GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics.

Places are limited and recruitment takes place on a rolling basis. Once the number of students accepted reaches the course limit, courses will be closed. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out on the course of your choice.
About the training provider
At the heart of our School Direct programme are two ‘Outstanding’ schools – Manor CE Academy (Hope Learning Trust) and Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy (Ebor Academy Trust). Both schools are recognised by the National College as outstanding practitioners in teaching and learning but both also have key characteristics that make them unique. These are our ‘Lead Schools’ who work in partnership with York St John University to deliver a truly school-centred programme.
