About the course

Our highly regarded Salaried School Direct programme is a demanding and rewarding route into teaching where you are employed by a school and paid a salary throughout. Like all our programmes, it incorporates hands-on classroom practice in two placement schools with ongoing central training.

Being on the Salaried programme means that you will have classroom responsibilities from September; Associate Teachers (trainees) can have sole responsibility for up to 10 hours of teaching per week from September, with a further increase in hours after Christmas if appropriate. We have carefully designed our programme to ensure that you are prepared for this responsibility by incorporating our unique and innovative ‘Summer Programme’ in June and July.

The Summer Programme is an intensive programme of central training designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and classroom practice ready for September. This is a compulsory part of the programme and therefore applicants must be able to attend from 17th June 2019 onwards. The Summer Programme cannot be combined with any other paid work, for example as a TA in a school.

You will be employed on a fixed term contract for 60 weeks which will run from June 2019 to the end of your training in July 2020. This covers the Summer Programme and the academic year from September to July. The salary amounts vary depending on the subject you choose to teach; this is due to the amount of national funding available in different subject areas. Please note that due to the salaried nature of this programme, Associate Teachers on this route are not eligible for national bursaries or student loans but for this route you do not need to pay tuition fees. The weekly structure from September to July is as follows:

  • Monday: Main Placement
  • Tuesday: Main Placement
  • Wednesday AM: Second Placement
  • Wednesday PM: Central Training
  • Thursday: Main Placement
  • Friday: Main Placement

As an Associate Teacher you will build up a body of evidence to show how you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards in the context of your training. This is a continual process and regular advice and guidance is given about the best forms of evidence to use to show progress. You will have a designated ‘Visiting Tutor’ who will visit you at three stages throughout the programme to monitor your progress and assess the evidence that you have collected.

Interview process

Our recruitment and selection process is carefully designed to allow us to make the right decisions as a partnership and also to give applicants a genuine insight into what life as a teacher is like, and how we operate as an ITT provider. During all stages of the recruitment and selection process you will be assessed against our Associate Teacher Person Specification.

The recruitment and selection day involves eight elements and gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and suitability for teaching in a range of contexts, as well as having the chance to spend a day in a partner school and to meet key members of our Central Team and partnership.

Due to the employment-based nature of our Salaried School Direct programme there is an additional school-based stage in the recruitment process for candidates who are identified as being suitable for this programme at ‘stage 1’. How school placements work

This carefully designed programme combines two school placements that are carried out alongside each from September through to at least April. Potential placement schools are closely involved in the recruitment and selection process and, for Salaried School Direct, candidates who are successful at ‘stage 1’ will be recommended to partnership schools for an in-school recruitment day in at least one school; this will then form a part of the placement school decision making process. The structure set out below means that Associate Teachers on this route spend the majority of time in their main (employing) placement school during the year whilst also building up experience and expertise in a contrasting placement school every Wednesday. The second placement is carefully selected to ensure that is accessible but also significantly different to the main placement to give a useful set of opportunities for deep learning and reflection beyond the main placement.

The second placement runs until at least the Easter holiday and, depending on a range of factors, may continue into the summer term.

Salaries for our Salaried School Direct programmes can be found on our website.

You will be employed by your main placement school and paid at the advertised rate for the duration of the 60 week programme, from 17th June 2019 – 31st July 2020.

There are no fees or costs associated with the Salaried QTS programme, but Associate Teachers undertaking the optional Master’s level PGCE element will need to pay the course fee of £1,500. More information can be found on our website.

For Salaried School Direct programmes no further financial support is available from the partnership.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL:

  • a UK degree or recognised international equivalent (applicants with non-UK degrees must ensure that they have obtained the relevant equivalency statement from NARIC)
  • GCSE English and Maths, grade C/4 or above or recognised equivalent (evidence of equivalence will be required)

DESIRABLE

  • 2:1 or above in a relevant degree
  • A level grade B or above or equivalent in relevant subject

Other requirements

Whilst a specified number of days of school experience is not a defined requirement, we believe that the best way for potential applicants to find out whether a career in teaching is suitable for them is to spend time in a school. We run an extensive school experience programme as well as a range of information events and recruitment workshops for all applicants.

Successful candidates will also be required to undertake statutory safer recruitment checks, such as an enhanced DBS check and ‘fitness to teach’ check, more information can be found on our website and will be given after interview.

About the accredited provider

The Cherwell OTSA SCITT draws on the expertise and commitment of an exceptional partnership of Oxfordshire schools and is based at The Cherwell School in Oxford. The SCITT was formally accredited in 2013 and prior to that, the schools in the partnership had been at the forefront of teacher training for decades.

The SCITT is expertly led by a dedicated central team and draws on a huge range of experts to ensure the very best preparation for your career. It was graded as Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted in November 2017.
