About the course
Our Primary with Mathematics School Direct Training programme closely mirrors the UCL (IOE) PGCE course. You experience two placements in schools within our cluster of schools. City Excellence in Teaching is a school direct route and allows you an immersive experience. You will work within our partner schools, and become part of a larger community of committed professionals. You will be part of our team.
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about working in an inner-London context and see Primary with Mathematics teaching as significantly contributing to the life chances of young people.

Your application form is received by Mulberry School for Girls, as the lead school for the City Excellence in Teaching partnership. We will contact you to inform you if you are being invited to stage one of the selection process. This will be held at one of our partner primary schools.
The Stage 1 process includes:
- Delivering a teaching sequence
- A written task
- A panel interview.
At Stage 1 we are looking to see that you have the potential to be a successful trainee teacher. We want to know why you are interested in teaching in inner London, and what drives your passion for teaching.
In your written task we will be looking for:
-An ability to express yourself clearly
-A considered view of the profession you wish to enter
-Accurate grammar and spelling
If you are successful in stage one of the selection process you will be recommended to UCL (IOE) who hold stage 2.
UCL (IOE) will hold a second interview. This interview looks to find out if you have a reasonable understanding of the national curriculum for teaching pupils aged 5 - 11 years, to see if you can communicate with an audience, to see that you have prepared yourself for taking a career move towards teaching and to look at your commitment to teaching.
How school placements work
City Excellence is a school based ITE programme which offers you the experience of working within a thriving and successful inner-city context and the opportunity to teach in two or three of the cluster schools.
You will complete placements in schools within our cluster. You complete your main placement in one school and then complete one, or possibly two, other shorter placements throughout the year. The school placements must be contrasting and there is a lot of diversity within our cluster of schools. One benefit of applying to train to teach through us is that you know that all of your placements will be within a pre-defined local area. This offers you security and means that you can research the schools in advance. You will experience teaching in different settings and will deepen your understanding of inner-city learning contexts. A large proportion of your training will be in classrooms. You will be mentored by subject specialists who are practising teachers in the schools as well as by experts from UCL (IOE). Our cluster includes primary and secondary schools and so there is an opportunity to teach for a short period in a different phase.
