About the course
Candidates will be trained to teach by experienced practitioners from within the Trust and from our partner organisation, Essex Teacher Training. The Paradigm Trust Schools Direct programme combines classroom 'hands on' experience with professional development sessions.
Candidates can expect to spend approximately 80% of their time in classrooms, working alongside and learning from established teachers. Professional development sessions are held at Ipswich Academy in Suffolk. Our partner, Essex Teacher Training leads additional professional development sessions for trainees in Colchester (all travel costs are covered.)
We have had great success with our Schools Direct programme and the majority of our trainees successfully apply for teaching roles within the Trust at the conclusion of their training.
If you are successfully shortlisted for interview, you can expect to be observed teaching a short lesson with a class so we can assess your teaching potential.
In addition, you will attend a face-to-face interview with senior members of staff.
As with all Initial Teacher Training programmes, you will be required to sit English and mathematics skills tests before the commencement of training.
How school placements work
Trainees will be based in Ipswich Academy with ages ranging from 11 - 16.
Trainees will spend the majority of their time at the school in either KS3 or KS4 with some time in an alternative key stage. They will also undertake a short placement in another school.
Trainees on the School Direct (salaried) programme are paid a minimum of point 1 on the unqualified teacher scale depending on experience.
As of September 2018, this is currently from £20,908 for inner London and £16,626 nationally.
There are no fees payable for this programme unless you wish to opt-in to the PGCE programme offered by Essex Teacher Training in partnership with the University of Derby. Fees are currently set at £1950 and payable in instalments.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
- A first degree at classification 2:2 or above. If your degree is from a non-UK university you will need to approach NARIC to gain an equivalence certificate.
- GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or 'C' in English and mathematics
DfE Professional Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy
- You are required to sit your first skills test within 8 weeks of being made a conditional offer and you must pass both skills tests prior to starting the programme.
We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and inspirational individuals who see teaching as more than 'just a job.' People who want to make a difference and help pupils to be their very best. People who want to change lives.
If you are looking to work with an organisation that has a proven track record of improving the life chances of thousands of children then this is the place for you.
Teaching is never an easy job, but if you are willing to put in the effort and commitment, then we will support you and the rewards will be immense.
Experience working with children is preferred although not essential.
About the training provider
“The best thing has been hands-on training that I can take into the classroom immediately. Lots of chances to see others teach and learn best practice.” (2017/18 trainee).
At Paradigm Trust, we have a teaching motto: “We teach the right things, efficiently.” Every minute we have with our learners is important and we can’t afford to waste time. We take what’s most important in every subject and make sure we teach it in the most effective way. Cognitive science is at the heart of our initial teaching programme - the science of learning. We know what works in the classroom and we want to share that with you.
Paradigm Trust has a significant track record of delivering high-quality initial teaching training. Last year 100% of our trainees were graded good or better. 90% of last year’s trainees successfully applied for permanent teaching posts with us this year.
“The second placement at Old Ford was really useful. Working in a different environment in a new year group was important for getting used to teaching in a different way and understanding the differences between year groups.” (2017/18 trainee).
Paradigm Trust’s mission is “to develop and sustain great schools where we can make the biggest difference to pupils.” Education changes lives. Come and train to teach with us.
