About the course
Training will take place within the Essendine Alliance and at the University of Roehampton. This course leads to QTS and PGCE (internationally recognised teaching qualification) with up to 60 Masters credits.
The practical placements in school provide substantial classroom experience appropriately staged throughout the year. You will undertake block school experiences for sustained periods of time in schools, working in at least two schools for a minimum of 120 days during the programme. Placements are undertaken within Essendine Alliance Schools.

All our students from our initial training year secured employment within the alliance.
We will invite selected candidates to an interview. The invitation letter will give full details of the interview. This is likely to be a classroom exercise, literacy test, and panel interview.
Applicants must bring the following to interview: their qualifications certificates; identity documents (photo id e.g. a passport, and evidence of residence e.g. a mobile phone bill or bank/savings statement). Overseas applicants must provide evidence of their eligibility to live and study in the UK. But full details will be sent out in the invitation letter.
If we make you an offer, it could be conditional upon various things such as DBS clearance, successful completion of tests at interview. You are entitled to wait for the outcome of all your applications before accepting an offer on UCAS and we fully endorse this.
How school placements work
Candidates apply to the Lead school but you could be placed in any of the schools within that partnership, in negotiation between you and the School. Second placements are selected by the Lead school to ensure that you have experience of a contrasting age phase and setting. We aim to ensure that trainees do not have to travel for longer than an hour to their placement schools.
You discuss the age range you wish to teach, but the lead school (in discussion with you) will select the age range you will be placed based on your interview and tasks. You can be places in any of the following year groups; either Early Years 3-7 Years, with placements in EYFS and KS1, or General Primary 5-11 years, which will require placements in KS1 and KS2.
Trainees will have two placements in mainstream schools. Trainees spend the Autumn term, Spring 2 and the Summer term in their host school. Trainees spend Spring 1 in their second placement school (6 weeks).
Unqualified teacher scale 1
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
A UK undergraduate honours degree or an equivalent qualification at 2:1 or above.
Grade C (or the newer Grade 5) in GCSE Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (or approved equivalents).
We want you to have passion and enthusiasm. We need trainees who can engage and inspire students to a love of learning, who are:
*committed and motivated to always strive for the best;
*being open to learn about children’s physical/social/emotional/cognitive needs and how these can affect behavior;
*creativity and passionate;
*ability to communicate well in written/spoken English, with at least basic computer skills and commitment to developing these;
- sense humour and an ability to laugh at yourself;
Whilst it is not an essential requirement, we highly recommend candidates have at least 2 weeks experience in a school prior to interview, demonstrating that they have first-hand experience of being a teacher.

Essendine Teaching Alliance offers dynamic and diverse settings within which to train. We are keen to support trainees and have a wealth of knowledge and expertise for you to share.
The Alliance offers a range of settings for training within both community and church schools. Placements range from EYFS, KS1 and KS2 and all trainees are placed with experience teachers.
Our University Partner Roehampton has been at the forefront of teacher education for over 100 years and has a long-established, international reputation as one of the principal providers of teacher education in the UK. Many members of the academic staff are at the cutting edge of research in teacher education, which has a positive impact on the quality of provision for all of our students; and all tutors have extensive teaching experience in schools with many having served as consultants or as Ofsted inspectors.
