About the course
This is a salaried primary PGCE (3-7) with QTS.
During the programme you will spend at least 120 days in schools and 70 days in centre-based training. Our training is designed by a highly qualified team of senior teachers and leading academics and is primarily based in school. The training is regularly adjusted to meet your emerging needs and to respond to the ever changing education landscape ensuring that you are learning at the cutting edge of research and best practice.
Training at the Centres
In these sessions you will be learning and practising your craft before teaching in the classroom. The training days include sessions in all National Curriculum subjects and associated areas, plus dedicated sessions for professional studies, SEND and inclusion, children’s mental health, behaviour and voice. We offer two training centres in Essex (Wickford and Southend) and give you access to all Canterbury Christ Church University facilities.
Training in School
Evidence shows that the best learning comes from training alongside the highest quality teachers, and with us, you benefit from a significant amount of real school experience as you work alongside the best teachers in our area.
We offer free additional training in Special Educational Needs and Disability, Early Years Foundation Stage, Leadership and Mathematics. All trainees are offered the opportunity to gain a sports coaching qualification during the year.
Throughout the programme you will gather evidence against the Teachers Standards which will be used, together with lesson observations and professional discussions to make judgements about your teaching for your final assessment in term 3. Your teaching will be assessed by both school mentors and your SCITT-based tutors.
Successful trainees are awarded QTS and also have the opportunity to study for a PGCE by submitting one written assignment, one presentation and a research project.
We have an exceptionally well regarded support programme in place for all trainees. You will be assigned your own personal tutor, who will visit you in school and at the base, and a class and school mentor whose role it is to train and support you in school.

Applications must be clearly written and provide evidence of a strong desire to be a primary teacher and an interest in children’s learning.
Successful applicants will be called to for interview as soon as we have received your applications from UCAS. If you have applied and have not heard back from us just give our office a ring so that we can check on the progress of your application.
The interview typically starts at 9.30 until 3.30 depending on the number of candidates being interviewed. The day gives applicants a chance to demonstrate all the necessary qualities and skills needed to be a successful teacher.
At the start of the day you will meet other candidates and have a chance to ask SCITT staff any questions you might have.
- During the day you will be asked to:
- Work with groups of children under the direction of the class teacher;
- Lead an activity with a whole class;
- Reflect on your experiences in the classroom and teaching that you have observed.
- Take tests in English and Mathematics;
- Observe an experienced teacher and write about what you have seen;
- Participate in an interview with a senior member of the SCITT staff and a headteacher from one of our schools
It is important that you come to interviews prepared for the tasks set so that we are able to assess your suitability to train.
Salaried candidates will also have a formal interview with any potential employing schools.
How school placements work
We pride ourselves on being the preferred teacher training provider for over 100 Essex, Southend, Thurrock and London primary schools. The breadth of the partnership ensures that we are able to offer a diverse range of training opportunities, learning from leading edge practitioners and experts. We do our very best to match you with a school as near to where you live as possible. We take your personal circumstances into account and aim to ensure that no trainee has to travel for more than an hour to reach their schools. You will train in at least 2 school spending the last two terms in the same school. For those on SEND and behaviour specialist routes you will spend terms 1 in a mainstream school and term 2 in a specialist setting then term 3 in either. We will ensure that you are offered experience in a range of socio-economic settings.
What will you do in school?
Working alongside experienced teachers, you will be supported to take on a slowly increasing teaching role. You will build up from working with small groups to teaching the whole class at 80% by the end of the final term. A class teacher and a member of SLT will provide high quality mentoring and pastoral support throughout your placements.

Beyond the programme
We are thrilled and proud to say, that a staggering 100% of our trainees are recruited into teaching posts at the end of their training, with around 85% being employed in our partnership schools. Our school-based support extends into the NQT year with social events, a comprehensive NQT training programme and access to 1:1 support from SCITT staff as required.
During your training you will be employed by one of our schools and will receive a salary based on the unqualified teachers salary scale.
The school will also pay your tuition fees. Anyone can apply for the school direct salaried route (the three year’s work experience has been removed as a requirement) but you should be aware that competition is fierce due to a smaller number of schools offering salaried places. Several of our schools do, however, offer salaried places each year. All are keen to find high quality trainees and invest in your school direct training with the promise of a job in the school at the end of the training if an appropriate position becomes available.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
To apply to us you must have:
An honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a university in Great Britain or Overseas, or an ordinary degree with 300 credits, of which 60 must be at level 6, or a qualification recognised as equivalent to a degree.
GCSEs at level C (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Science and English.
The ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any school experience, many of our schools are happy to provide the opportunity for applicants to gain experience with them.

About the training provider
We are a large dynamic partnership of schools with 21 years of experience behind us. Our excellent training is supported by expert practitioners in more than100 good and outstanding primary schools throughout the East of England. Due to the outstanding reputation we hold locally for the provision of rigorous and effective training 100% of our trainees gain employment each year, often within partner schools (86% in 2019). Not only will you gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by training with us, but you will also receive professional training in educational theory leading to a PGCE award with masters level credits (validated by Canterbury Christ Church University). What happens if you have additional needs?
Each year we recruit trainees with a wide range of additional needs and we regularly work in partnership with other agencies to ensure we provide everyone with the best possible support. The SCITT employs the services of a specialist in Occupational Health, and working together, we can accommodate the needs of any applicant we feel has the potential become a good teacher and therefore an asset to our schools.
Dyslexia and Dyspraxia
We accept trainees every year with dyslexia and /or dyspraxia and have a number of specialist mentors in our schools who can provide bespoke advice and guidance. All trainees with disabilities will have allocated sessions with a centre-based tutor who can ensure that any reasonable adjustments are made to your training.
We pride ourselves on our approach to trainee wellbeing. We work extensively with other services to ensure that we provide you with the best possible support. We are able to offer coaching and access to counselling services as needed. All our staff are trained mental health first aiders. Taught sessions include mindfulness, stress management and resilience training.
