About the course
What does a school centred initial teacher training course involve?
To become a qualified teacher, you need to successfully complete teacher training. In so doing, you will achieve ‘qualified teacher status’ – or QTS.
All teacher training courses include:
Practical classroom experience in at least two schools (ideally in diverse settings)
Academic study to give you the knowledge and understanding to teach successfully
An assessment of your teaching skills (through being observed teaching classes)
You will have an extended support network of experienced teachers and mentors on hand to help you throughout your course.
What will you learn?
You will have the opportunity to learn ‘on the job’ from the very beginning. You will benefit from working and learning every day in a school and getting an immediate insight into what teaching involves.
By the end of our course you should:
Know and understand the national curriculum in your chosen subject(s) and/or age group along with requirements of relevant examination specifications.
Be able to plan and prepare for lessons and set students’ learning objectives
Have strong classroom management skills, such as knowing how to promote good behaviour and minimise disruption
Have knowledge and understanding of how to address differing needs and abilities of students including those with SEND.
Be able to assess students effectively.
Interview process
We have a rigorous recruitment process which is in two parts.
Part One includes a presentation and panel interview, along with a literacy test and subject knowledge audit. If you are successful at part one you will be invited to part two.
Part Two you will deliver a 30 minute lesson in one of the partnership schools. This will be observed by up to two experienced teachers and feedback given. Following this an offer will / will not be made.
Southend SCITT is committed to safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. The suitability of all prospective employees or volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment.
