About the course
Religion has always been, and continues to be for us today, a powerful driving force in society. It affects us all, whether or not we are believers, and is an intensely curious subject that calls out for better understanding. A knowledge of religion is needed to inform our own political and social understanding, to enlighten the subtleties of literature and to aid our understanding of history. Beyond this, the study of Religious Studies is a fascinating one, interesting for its own sake and useful in that it provides an insight into the study of ideas and their accompanying debates. It forces you to examine your own ideas and raises questions where before you thought there were none. The focus on developing analytical skills means that Religious Studies qualifications are valued by colleges and universities.
We are interested in recruiting teachers who can inspire, challenge, and enjoy working with young people, in a way that it allows them to develop their understanding of the importance of religion within society and allowing them to also explore their own personal spirituality.

If you are invited for interview, you will receive an email from us that explains everything you need to know about your interview. This includes the date, time and the location, as well as what to prepare beforehand and what will happen on the day, so it is really important to read this email very carefully. As well as having your invite sent by email, you will be notified through UCAS Track if you have been invited to an Interview Day.
Your interview will take place in one of the Leeds SCITT schools.
How school placements work
The first stage of your training is based predominantly in the lead school for your subject. This school has a specialism in your subject area and the lead tutors are subject experts who are also outstanding teachers and trainers. Each school has dedicated training areas so that your training consists of quality time with your tutors.
The initial training is focused on subject pedagogy;
• How highly effective planning leads to successful outcomes in the classroom;
• How you can ensure pupils make good progress in their learning;
• How you can assess learning to inform next steps and strategies to support highly skilled differentiation.
You will be immersed in the school environment from week 1 and you will be seen as a professional by school staff, pupils and parents. This allows you to take the theory, thinking and research and see / implement this in the classroom, ensuring you develop your ‘teacher’ persona as quickly as possible.
The second stage of the course is a full-time placement in a partnership school with some core development days at your lead school and LTU.
During this stage you will have a dedicated subject mentor who will observe you teach, support you with your planning and developing your subject knowledge for teaching. They will be your first port of call during this stage of training when you establish yourself in the classroom as the teacher.
The third stage of the course is a full-time placement in a contrasting partnership school, again with some core development
Finally, in the last two weeks of the training year, you will have the opportunity to undertake an enrichment and enhancement placement or experiences. What this looks like is entirely different for each trainee as this is a time to pursue an interest, an additional subject, organising out of school learning and many more options!
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
UK & EU Students:
Leeds Trinity postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) tuition fees are £9,250 in 2019-20. Tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years.
You will not have to pay these fees upfront. Eligible UK and EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees from the government.
UK students on non-salaried places studying full-time can apply for a package of maintenance funding from the government to help with general living costs and additional funding if you have children and/or a disability.
English and EU students can apply and find out more information at www.gov.uk/studentfinance. This website also has a calculator which gives you an estimate of what you will receive.
An honours degree at a classification of 2:2 or above (if you are in your final year at University you should have a 2:2 or above as a predicted grade).
Your degree should be relevant to the subject of Religious Education but if your degree is not directly related to this subject, we will look at your A-level qualifications.
GCSE Grade C (or 4) English and Mathematics
A pass in each of the Professional Skills Tests
