About the course
With United Teaching, you have the option to pursue a PGCE or QTS only route. Every trainee works to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but you can also work towards a PGCE with 60 Master's level credits.
- The PGCE is assessed by Goldsmiths via two extended essays.
- As the first national School Centered Initial Teacher Training Programme (SCITT), we are able to award you with QTS directly, reflecting the proven quality of our programme.
Before undertaking the course, you will be required to attend our 2 week summer institute which will prepare you to hit the ground running in September. This is delivered in our two lead schools in the north and south, Stockport Academy and Paddington Academy.
All our trainees are guaranteed a minimum of 120 days in their main placement school.
- In addition, you will spend 4 weeks in a second school placement. - Traineees are guaraneed experience of transition across the key stage in which they are training and this is built into our training programme. - Training takes place weekly and is delivered in our lead schools and regional training centres.
- Training will ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of all the different aspects of your developing teaching practice, whilst also incorporating subject specific development.
Interview process
If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend the first stage of our assessment process, which will at one of our regional assessment centres.
- Upon completion of the first assessment day, you will be advised whether you were successful, and invited to a second day.
- Stage two assessments are usually held in the week following stage one and are held in a school that you’ve expressed an interest to teach in.
You'll be notified within 48 hours of your assessment day whether you've been successful or not, subject to references. Your offer will be conditional on you:
- Gaining the degree qualification
- Having GCSE Maths and English (and Science for primary education)
- Having passed your skills tests
- Having clear identity and DBS checks
In England, you are required to submit an application via UCAS to formally accept your teacher training place. However, as we do not require this to consider your application - and you can apply to us via the eligibility form on our website - you can complete it at the very beginning of the process or once we have made you an offer to provide your references.
How school placements work
When you apply to us, you have the option to express a preference in where you would like to be placed if successful. As a national SCITT, we place trainees in a large number of schools across England.
During the assessment process, we will ask you about your flexibility in choice of location.
We endeavour to place you in your first choice of school. If this is not possible we will seek alternatives that work for you.
We always seek to ensure minimum travel times for trainees between home and school.
Once you have secured an offer for your main placement school, you are guaranteed a minimum of 120 days school based experience there. In addition, you will also partake in a 4 week second school placement.
We offer primary (5-11) and secondary training courses (11-16).
Fees
Tuition Fees for the PGCE are £9000.
Tuition Fees for QTS route only are £6000.
You may be eligible for financial support from Student Finance to fund tuition fees and other living costs. This would be subject to your personal circumstances.
