About the course
Our trainees are based in a school four days a week and will attend the SCITT's Training Centre one day a week. Here they are given the theoretical understanding and the strategies in which to immerse themselves gradually but confidently in the school based experience. The Core training will include focusing upon: setting high expectations; behaviour management; lesson planning; assessment and data and meeting the needs of all learners.
As a Secondary trainee our trainees are given additional subject days in which they are taught the specific curriculum and pedagogy of their subject area. These sessions are tailored to cater for the specific demands of the subject but equally the areas which need to be developed as part of the trainee’s subject knowledge and application.
Trainees will be in one main host school, September to July, with an additional placement in Spring 1 half term (January-February) and a week’s Special Education Needs placement. A great strength of the SCITT's provision is that it can adapt the programme to meet the needs and the areas of development for each trainee. Through the half termly assessment points and indeed the mid-year review the SCITT tracks the trainee’s progress against the Teachers’ Standards and then adapt the school experience and indeed the training based on the INDIVIDUAL trainee’s needs.
Trainees are assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Over the course of the year, trainees will build a bank of evidence against the criteria in-order to support the judgement made by the mentor on a half termly basis. In addition, as part of the PGCE element of the programme (led by Sheffield Hallam Tutors but delivered at the Centre in Huddersfield) there are two assignments to be completed throughout the course of the year:
- Reflecting on Pedagogical Approaches (5000 words)
- Exploring Professional Development through Collaborative Enquiry (5000 words)
Trainees will be supported fully through the online and centre based resource system, including the support network of mentor and tutor.
Once we receive your application we will assess it against the shortlisting criteria. If the application meets the criteria then we will invite you to an assessment.
The assessment usually takes half a day (depending upon the number of interviewees on the day) and will involve:
- A Teaching and Learning activity involving students.
- A formal interview (focusing upon your understanding of the curriculum, assessment, behaviour management; safeguarding etc...)
- A subject knowledge assessment given to you on the day
- An English and mathematics assessment on the day.
The purpose of the assessment activities above is to assess:
*Your engagement with young people
*Your passion for your subject/teaching and learning
*Your current understanding of teaching and learning and the workings of a school
*Your level of resilience
*Your subject knowledge
From the assessment we then make a decision on whether we are to offer you a conditional place and if so, what support we need to offer in advance of you starting the programme.
How school placements work
We have a number of different schools within our School Direct partnership and therefore we work closely with the schools when making a decision on the trainee's placement. This will involve liaising with the school to identify what they need but equally looking at the trainee's qualification, experience and skill set to see what they can offer. As a School Direct partnership the schools are looking at succession planning and being able to grow their own teachers for the future.
Our Primary programme covers the age range of 5-11 and our Secondary programme covers the age range of 11-16.
As a trainee you will be in a main host school from September until July and we feel this placement is incredibly important in building the incredibly important relationships with children and colleagues. With this year long placement (apart from half a term in a contrasting setting and for Primary a different phase) you will have the opportunity to be a member of staff within the school, to build the all important relationships and to see how a school cycle works.
In addition, you will have experience in pre and post phase settings and we pride ourselves on our additional SEND placement working very closely with Castle Hill Specialist School in Huddersfield to organise such placements. We feel it is incredibly important that as a practitioner you have the full knowledge and understanding of students with special educational needs and our SEND experience (including placements in Pupil Referral Units) allow you to have a real insight into the SEND provision and meeting the needs of all children.

The trainee will be paid as a MINIMUM on the first incremental point of the Unqualified Teacher paysale, which in 2018 is £17,208 for the area in which we are based.
As a Salaried trainee you can make the decision to pay for the PGCE, which when going to press is £1545.
The accredited provider of the QTS, The Huddersfield Horizon SCITT, can devise a payment plan for you to support you with the PGCE payment.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
*All entrants must have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics.
*All entrants must hold a first degree of a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification.
Legislation does not specify that teachers must have a degree in a particular subject or discipline. It is the Teachers’ Standards that specify the subject knowledge required for the award of QTS. All trainee teachers must meet these by the time they complete their training.

We are a strategic partner of the Pennine Teaching School and we work closely with many of the schools in the Alliance, using their schools (in addition to our own Trust schools) to train and mentor our trainees. The Teaching School also organises the Special Educational needs placement which our trainees have as part of their school based experience.
About the accredited body
The Huddersfield Horizon SCITT accredits our School Direct trainees, awarding them with Qualified Teacher Status, whilst Sheffield Hallam works in tandem with the SCITT to deliver the Post Graduate Certificate of Education.
Our trainees attend the brand new multi million pound Partnership Training centre at least once a week to support their four days in school.
The Partnership provides weekly core training from facilitators who are ‘’inspirational’’ and that encourage trainees to feel safe taking risks and to develop a fluent teaching style.
The SCITT prides itself on its bespoke and ‘round the clock’ support for each individual trainee.
Training with disabilities and other needs
As Lead School, Moor End Academy is committed to providing an environment that enables full curriculum and training access that values and includes all trainees regardless of their physical, sensory and emotional needs. We are committed to taking positive action in the spirit of the Equality Act 2010 with regard to disability and to developing a culture of inclusion, support and awareness within the Partnership.
Our training centre caters for trainees who are physically disabled. The Centre has a lift facility and the training is contained within one area. The catering facilities are exceptional with specialist cooking and washing facilities to meet the needs of wheelchair users.
When placing trainees within our partnership schools we will take into consideration the specific needs of the individual and make reasonable adjustments as required.
On our Campus we have a Visual Impairment unit which is able to cater for the needs of the trainees and can adapt resources accordingly. Equally we are able to source resources which may be of benefit to any trainee with dyslexia in-order to support them in their study and school based training.
As part of the SCITT's training, our trainees complete a Wellbeing Plan which is used to shape the support we offer our trainees. When necessary, and with the trainee’s consent, we will seek additional resources eg mental health counsellors to cater for the needs of our trainees.
