South Bromsgrove High Teaching School Alliance is a well-established and highly succcessful provider of School Direct Initial Teacher Training. Our Primary School Direct courses are coordinated by St John’s Cof E Middle School,Bromsgrove, in collaboration with the University of Worcester and a strong partnership of schools, offering vibrant and high-achieving training placements. Our growing partnership of schools are situated across Bromsgrove, Droitwich, Redditch, Worcester and Dudley, allowing us the flexibility to place trainees in schools based on their location and specific training needs.

Throughout all our training courses, we strive to prepare trainees, not just for the demands of the training year, but also for an enduring and successful career in primary education. 100% of trainees who achieved QTS during 2017/18 are currently employed in local primary, first and middle schools. This is testament to both our recruitment process and comprehensive training programme.
The School Direct Programme is a school-based training year that demands a full-time commitment. Our selection process is thorough and designed to help you feel confident that the School Direct pathway is the right route into teaching for you. Interviews will be held at St John’s CofE Middle School in collaboration with our partner First, Primary and Middle Schools and the University of Worcester.
The interview will involve:
- leading an activity with a small group of children;
- a written activity based on some pre-reading;
- an interview.
All details relating to the activity and the written task will be sent out in good time, prior to interview.
The interview day is always a very positive experience for all concerned. We endeavour to make you feel welcome and we encourage you to come with lots of questions about the course. Interviews may be organised in groups, whereby you will be interviewed with 4 or 5 other candidates, or they may be arranged individually.
How school placements work
The Primary course will enable you to teach children in the 5-11 age range.
As a Primary trainee teacher, you will undertake three School Experience placements in two different schools. Throughout your school experience, you will gain experience in two different key stages in order to meet the requirements of the qualification. Your School Experience 1 (Autumn) and School Experience 3 (Summer) will be based at your main school. School Experience 2, (Spring), will be based in a contrasting school. Your main school will be determined by the South Bromsgrove Teaching School Alliance in collaboration with the Primary Lead at St John's CofE Middle School and the University of Worcester. In placing trainees, we will take account of your location and specific training needs. We are keen to expand our partnership of schools, should trainees wish to train in specific schools, with whom they have existing links. All partnership schools are subject to Quality Assurance procedures, carried out by the University of Worcester.
Trainees will spend the majority of the time in school, but will spend one day a week in Professional Studies sessions. This will take place either at the University of Worcester or one of our alliance schools. These sessions cover all aspects of the Teacher Standards and draw on the extensive expertise from within the South Bromsgrove Teaching School Alliance. Through our programme, you will be able to visit a range of different schools and institutions and network with staff and trainees from across our network. We take a huge amount of pride in our Professional Studies as we ensure that the course not only prepares trainees for the demands of the training year (including teaching practice and assignments), but also prepares trainees for a career in primary education.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- You'll need to hold an undergraduate degree awarded by a UK higher education provider, or a recognised equivalent qualification.
- You'll need to have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C/4, or above, in the GCSE examinations in English, Mathematics and a GCSE science subject examination.
- You'll also need to pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before you begin your teacher training.
What are we looking for – Applicants will need to demonstrate:
- A commitment to the welfare and well-being of young people;
- Enthusiasm for teaching and an ability to relate to young people;
- A passion for your subject and for education in general;
- A willingness to learn through experience and respond to feedback;
- Some prior school experience is strongly recommended.
Prospective trainees will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
About the training provider
South Bromsgrove High Teaching School Alliance provides a high quality, school-based learning opportunity. ‘South’ is an outstanding school (Ofsted 2012/13) where students enjoy learning in a way which stimulates their imagination and creativity. We maintain high standards of achievement, offer a broad and relevant curriculum, and place great emphasis on high quality learning experiences in lessons.
The unique aspect of our School Direct training programmes is that delivery is shared across schools from our wider alliance, who have specific areas of expertise. This allows insight into First, Middle, High and Special Schools and a broader understanding of education and pedagogy. Our highly successful primary programme is coordinated by St John’s CofE Middle School (judged Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012) and placements are provided in a range of excellent local First, Middle and Primary Schools. For our secondary training programmes, we can offer placements at South Bromsgrove High Academy or Trinity High School, Redditch (depending on subject).
All schools in the alliance are highly committed to the training of teachers in a school based environment with access to high quality support from Higher Education Institutions. South Bromsgrove High Teaching Alliance has experienced subject and professional mentors who are involved in the planning and development of the School Direct courses. Every trainee is assigned a Professional and Subject Mentor who will be experienced in mentoring, coaching and giving feedback. You will meet with your mentor regularly, to review and set targets related to the teacher standards.
About the accredited body
The University of Worcester has a longstanding reputation of excellent in Initial Teacher Training. Their programmes offer the following:
- Placements in at least two different schools, giving a breadth of experience and the chance to specialise whilst developing self-reflection, self-criticism and self-confidence
- Opportunities to develop additional specialisms in areas such as special educational needs, technology enhanced learning, and leadership
- Extra-curricular opportunities, such as conferences and special projects, to boost employability
The course lasts for 10 months and there are excellent tax free training bursaries available
