About the course
School Direct is a way for passionate and enthusiastic people to train to become teachers. You will be trained in a highly professional and supportive environment and will develop the skills, knowledge and expertise that will enable you to plan and deliver engaging learning experiences for pupils of all abilities and dispositions.
Trainees are based in schools from the first day of term and spend the majority of their time in a school environment in order to learn hands on.
You will receive training from both Newcastle university and across our network of schools on areas such as lesson planning, behaviour for learning, assessment and progress, giving you a wider perspective on aspects of pedagogy and beyond. You will also receive subject specific training through specific subject days at the University, as well as the knowledge of the department from your school
As part of this course you will gain qualified teacher status, and work with Newcastle university to achieve a PGCE with 60 Masters credits. You are assessed during your two formal placements (short placement 4-6 weeks, long placement 10-12 weeks) by weekly observations. You will write three assignments for the university over the course of the year based on academic research and your own practice. You will also be assessed against your training towards the teacher standards via reflective evaluations of your lessons.
Throughout all of this you will receive support both in school, from your subject mentor and professional tutor, and from the university from a subject link and a progress tutor.
As you have chosen a specific school which you would like to train within our alliance you will be interviewed at that school. On the interview panel will be a member of the Three Rivers Teaching School Alliance, the subject leader and possible a member of the senior leadership team.
If the school place you have applied to gets filled, you may be asked to attend an interview at another school instead.
The interview process will consist of planning and teaching a 20 minute lesson, a short presentation, an individual interview and in some cases a subject knowledge test.
How school placements work
In total we partner with 7 schools across Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle. If you are successful you will be assigned to the school which you have applied (or an alternative as discussed at interview if this place is full). This is known as your host school and you will spend the majority of your training year at this school.
As part of the course you will also go on a short placement for 8 - 12 weeks, which could be at any school in our wider partnership, which could be Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle and Gateshead. We will take in account your travel arrangements when placing you, however you are required to train in two contrasting schools so some travel will be required.
Across the year you will teach ages 11 - 16 across key stages 3 and 4 with sixth form enhancement.

You’ll get a bursary of £15,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

A UK undergraduate degree with a first or 2:1 classification, or recognised equivalent (a 2:2 classification may be accepted for candidates who demonstrate exceptional aptitude or have long term experience in a school setting) which must be at least 50% in the subject you want to teach.
A GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Maths
If you have studied outside the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are the equivalent to UK GCSEs, A Levels and an undergraduate degree.
Evidence of an interest and enthusiasm for teaching young people.
Strong specialist knowledge of the subject you wish to teach.
School experience is essential if you are interested in becoming a teacher. Before you apply for teacher training, it is advisable to gain as much experience in the classroom as possible. Spending time in a classroom is the ideal way to strengthen your application. School experience gives you the chance to watch lessons and see for yourself what it’s really like to be a teacher – and allows you to draw on your own examples in your application and interview.
You will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to verify your suitability for working with children and young people.
All candidates applying for ITT courses are required to have passed the national literacy and numeracy tests before commencing their training. The Three Rivers Teaching School Alliance cannot accept applicants onto the course until evidence can be provided that the tests have been successfully completed.
Experience within a school in the last 2 years is favourable.

The Three Rivers Teaching School Alliance has developed a strong network of schools to deliver a dynamic School Direct teacher training programme. We work in partnership with Newcastle and Northumbria Universities offering one year full time School Direct tuition placements in primary and secondary settings leading to a full Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
You would become part of this long established partnership of schools that work closely together to share good practice and learn from each other. We believe passionately in the school based route into teaching and are dedicated to using our knowledge, skills and expertise to train the next generation of teachers. We are fortunate to be able to offer a wide variety of host schools including first, middle schools and high schools. In our schools trainees feel valued and supported. They have access to a high quality training programme and engage in a wide variety of experiences. Each trainee is assigned a mentor, carefully selected for their ability to develop the practice of new entrants to the profession, allowing them to fulfil their potential to become outstanding practitioners.
About the accredited body
The PGCE Team pride ourselves on providing our students with an excellent standard of education, training and practical teaching experience and Newcastle University achieved Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Our programme provides rigorous academic and school training and both components are integrated so that learning is relevant to your development as a confident, capable and reflective teacher, forming the basis for the written work submitted as part of the Master Level element of the programme. You will undertake 60 credits of Master's-Level credits over three course modules which are rooted in classroom practice and aligned with research and theory.
