About the course
Our 38-week, full-time PGCE Secondary History programme will equip you with the skills, experience and knowledge you need to teach History to pupils aged between 11 and 16 – plus the option of additional experience of A Level History teaching.
Stimulating young minds and watching pupils grow in confidence to achieve their full potential – that’s what secondary education is all about. It can be a challenging profession, but also one of the most rewarding. Teach history and you could really set your pupils’ imaginations alight, instilling a life-long passion for History.
Upon successful completion of your PGCE, you will graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.

Interviews are part of the formal selection process. You will need to present yourself well, come prepared, and dress smartly. Your interview day will include:
- An introductory talk
- An individual interview
- A written task
You may also be asked to complete other relevant tasks such as:
- Working with small groups of pupils
- Giving a presentation
- A group interview
- Literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge questions
How school placements work
UEA’s PGCE Secondary programme places great emphasis on practical skills and the realities of classroom teaching.
You will be based in schools two-thirds of the 38-week programme (120 days). On the School Direct route you will already know the Lead and partner schools in which you will have at least one of you placements when you are offered a place on the course.
The programme begins with structured observation in both secondary and primary schools in your local area.
During the two extensive placements in our partnership schools, you’ll gain a broad range of practical teaching experience. You will learn to put ideas and theory into practice as you work in university and your two placement schools.

Prior to submitting your application, you will need:
- A GCSE pass at grade C or an equivalent qualification in English language and mathematics
- IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent qualification, if your first language is not English
Prior to beginning the course, you will need to have achieved a degree or its equivalent. As a general guideline, approximately 50% of the degree should be relevant to the subject you’ll teach. A degree classification of 2:2 or above is preferred in History or a closely related subject.
Trainees are selected on the basis of their application form, references and an interview. You are encouraged to prepare thoroughly.
Application forms should demonstrate strengths in subject and curriculum knowledge, your enthusiasm and commitment to a career in teaching, and the age range for which you have applied.
Prior to submitting your application, we recommend you gain some observational experience in a classroom environment if possible. This will help you gain an up-to-date understanding of how classrooms are managed and how teaching and learning takes place.

Many of our trainees are employed in local schools once they have completed their training year. Trainees are supported by school mentors but also a range of staff who have a range of experience in schools as either headteachers, members of senior leadership teams and other leadership position so have a wealth of experience to share with trainees.
