About the course
If you’re passionate about young people and want to introduce them to the exciting world of music and music making in all its forms then we’re excited to train you to ensure you excel as a teacher.
You’ll explore the skills and knowledge that music as an art form offers at secondary education level; and to train to become a confident, dynamic and creative teacher with the ability to make music accessible to all. You’ll discover how pupils learn and explore ways in which you can plan musical activities that will ensure they progress and develop their musicality.
Exploring an inclusive and rich approach towards music, you’ll prioritise active music making to promote musical thinking and learn how to inspire and enthuse your pupils by taking them on an exciting and stimulating musical journey. Techniques used include links many different forms of music and music making. These can be used to help pupils to become more self-confident, informed and culturally aware.
You will be placed in two contrasting schools with the support of a subject mentor in each school and a tutor at the University.
The interview will include:
A formal interview with members of the ITT team.
A pre – set task to be delivered in a short teaching episode to an appropriate group of students.
A Literacy test for those who have not passed their Professional Skills tests prior to interview.
Interview decisions will not be communicated to applicants directly through the partnership but through the UCAS system.

How school placements work
On the secondary programme you will spend 2 terms in your home school and 1 term in your second school with opportunities for further training at our partner schools.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
You’ll get a bursary of £9,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

Most successful applicants have 2:1 degrees in Music or Music Technology or a 2.1 degree of which 50% is in one of the above subjects.
Applicants who apply with a 2.2 can be considered if they have been awarded a Masters or PhD Degree.
Successful applicants will have a strong academic track record and will be able to demonstrate a passion for teaching Music. You will possess a high level of individuality, independence and initiative alongside a commitment to developing learners who are creative. In addition, you will be able to build strong and effective relationships with students and professional colleagues and will have good interpersonal skills.
Selection is based on performance at interview, a satisfactory fitness to teach assessment and a satisfactory DBS-enhanced-disclosure. It would be advantageous to reflect on any school-based experience or experience working with young-people in another context at interview. The ‘Qualifications’ section describes our standard offer. If you have a different academic background, equivalent to degree-level, you can make an application through UCAS for consideration. The DfE entry requirement to pass professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy has been removed for 2020/21 entry onwards. PGCE trainees will be benchmarked during their training against a Government-defined set of mathematics and English skills.
About the training provider
Choosing Schools Direct through the North Devon Teaching School Alliance is the entry point to North Devon's best Primary and Secondary Schools. We offer a one year school-based programme where trainees are part of a school team from day one.
School Direct trainees benefit from a full 40-week schedule. Complementing their time learning the job in school trainees receive HEI lecturers, and a contrasting second school Key Stage experience. For secondary, subject specialism days have been developed across our schools to support subject and pedagogy specialisms.
Shared training across the Alliance gives complete and contrasting experiences. Trainee teachers who successfully complete all modules are awarded a P.G.C.E. Post Graduate Certificate of Education (including up to 60 Masters credits) with Qualified Teacher Status. School Direct is designed to give experienced professionals and higher class degree students an alternative pathway to a career as a teacher, whilst enabling schools to develop exactly the teachers they need.
Our combination of expert school based practitioners and University partners brings teacher education pedagogy and up to date research within a school based setting. We nurture our talent and provide the essential classroom experiences that allow trainees to put theory into practice as they develop into an outstanding practitioner.
About the accredited body
We work with the University of Exeter who offer our secondary phase School Direct PGCE provision :
Trainees are based entirely in schools for the academic year. They are registered with the university and are eligible for training bursaries and student loans. The Masters modules are delivered by distance learning, through two online 30-credit modules, plus other online tools.

We will assess individual needs on a one to one basis to enable them fair access to our programmes.
The University of Exeter provides comprehensive student services that include AccessAbility and Wellbeing teams, Student Learning Skills Service, Student Advice Unit, Counselling Service, Students’ Union Advisors, Student Health Centre, Family Centre and the Chaplaincy.
PGCE trainees can access the support of a Wellbeing Services Welfare Caseworker to discuss concerns, talk through options for support or understand more about how the University Wellbeing Services may be able to help.
Alongside the support described above, every PGCE trainee is assessed by an Occupational Health provider as part of the admissions process to ensure they are fit to teach in a school setting. If the Occupational Health provider recommends any adjustments, the University’s Partnership Office will ensure you are placed in schools where these adjustments can be made, providing they are logistically possible and reasonable.
