About the course
You will attend university training days at UCL Institute of Education alongside students recruited via other routes and other School Direct partnerships. On the Tuition Fee routes you will carry out academic assignments leading to the award of masters level credits.
The primary PGCE is a highly popular course that develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers.
As part of the programme you will be assigned a university tutor who will support your development as a teacher through tutorials, visits to school and guidance with assignments.
Successfully completing all aspects of the course will gain you the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which also carries 60 M level credits that may be used towards a subsequent masters degree. The course also leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

Eleanor Palmer School is the lead school in our Teaching School Alliance and we will be co-ordinating the recruitment process. If your initial application meets our criteria, you will be invited to attend Eleanor Palmer Primary School for an assessment day which will involve an assessed group exercise with some of our pupils, a short presentation and an interview with a panel of interviewers including a senior teacher from one of our partnership schools and a representative of the Institute of Education.
UCL carries out a second-stage review of all applicants who are referred after school interviews. They do not re-interview Primary PGCE candidates following a successful interview with us.
How school placements work
You will be placed in one of our partner schools for the first two terms of your training. After this autumn / spring experience we identify each individual's strengths and areas for development so that we place you in a partnership school for the summer term which is best suited to meet your targets.
Crucially, our students also get together on Thursdays (each time in a different school from within the partnership) and spend time observing lessons, benefiting from additional training and reflecting on practice. This creates a really strong peer group which students find incredibly supportive and valuable. It also adds an important third dimension to your teacher training experience (in addition to UCL/IOE study and the placements).

- Schools that have strong and long standing links with the UCL IOE;
- The opportunity to ‘front-load’ the training year with the chance to observe outstanding practice;
- Experience in genuinely comprehensive schools where you would gain exposure to both very challenging pupils and also some exceptionally high achievers;
- School-based tutorials as a group led by experienced members of school leadership teams;
- Learning in schools that share a strong commitment to child centred hands on learning rooted in an exciting topic based approach;
- The chance to train among highly committed, positive professional staff who love their jobs;
- The opportunity to become part of a school community, gaining understanding of the richness and complexities of primary teaching.
- Strong programme leadership by Eleanor Palmer Deputy Head, Sally Hill and from the UCL IOE. Sally liaises with mentors and classteachers from our across our partner schools to ensure that all students have a very well-supported ITT experience.
Your tutor from the Institute of Education will visit you in school on a regular basis and liaise with your school mentor regarding your training and development. Your Institute tutor will carry out your final assessment in school against the national Teachers’ Standards.

UCL requires a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree and GCSEs in English Language and Maths (for Secondary programmes) plus Science (for Primary programmes) at grade C/5 or above. UCL does not accept ‘additional’ or ‘applied’ GCSE subjects. For equivalency testing UCL will only accept tests from www.equivalencytesting.com

About the training provider
Eleanor Palmer School leads the Camden Primary Partnership - a group of fantastic schools in an outstanding London borough. We work with the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), provider of first class teacher training for over 100 years.
Our partnership aims to provide an outstanding education for all children in our community. We want to provide this opportunity for trainees because we believe in the importance of collaboration with an emphasis on good primary practice. This is our 8th year running this programme, which receives consistently great feedback. Students are placed within a partner school, choosing their specialist key stages. Students also meet in partner schools on Thursday afternoons while on placement to observe lessons, creating a peer group which students find incredibly valuable in addition to study and school placements.
This year's programme includes workshops on setting up inspiring classrooms, using literature to enthuse, curriculum as behaviour management, and essentials of effective maths practice.
Our students benefit from an excellent support network including Caroline Heal (consultant and former IoE tutor of 30 years ), a lead partnership mentor, Sally Hill (Eleanor Palmer School Deputy), school mentors, class teacher mentors and the student peer group. As the year progresses, our students guide our programme and we base sessions on specific needs and requests. We survey participants after every session for feedback on session impact.
