About the course
The Primary General (salaried) is a PGCE course offered in conjunction with Roehampton University. This course leads to QTS and PGCE.
The salaried School Direct training programme is open to high quality graduates with three or more years' professional experience. It provides an employment-based avenue into teaching, where the student is employed by the school as an unqualified teacher and their salary and training is subsidised by the Teaching Agency.
Candidates who are shortlisted are invited to a selection day at the lead Primary school. Candidates should allow a full day for this and we expect candidates to dress in a professional manner. Candidates will be asked to lead a mixed ability group learning activity, complete a written task, deliver a presentation on a given theme and an interview.
Successful candidates will be offered a one year contract as an unqualified teacher by the hosting school. This means you will be a member of staff at that school whilst you complete your training. Candidates then have ten days to accept or reject the offer. Candidates will also be required to complete the Skills Tests in Maths and English before starting their course. We normally expect candidates to complete the Skills Tests within six weeks of being offered and accepting a place.
You will also have to be certified as meeting the national requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach. Roehampton University will ask you to complete a health questionnaire for scrutiny by their occupational health provider. Candidates are responsible for the cost of obtaining occupational health clearance, which is approximately £45.
You will also be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the DBS as a condition of entry.
How school placements work
The School Direct Salaried route leads to a PGCE with 60 Masters credits on successful completion. There will be three assignments across the year, each leading to 20 Masters level credits. You will spend at least 120 days in school over the year long programme, and will also attend classes at Roehampton. Your main placement will be in the school that you have applied to and been appointed as an unqualified member of staff and there will also be a shorter placement in another school which will add breadth to the experience.
You will be visited in school by a university tutor, and you will have a mentor in school. The training at Wandle TSA and Roehampton will enable you to reflect upon your practice within the broad context of educational theory so that you will feel equipped to teach in any school.
You’ll be paid and taxed as an unqualified teacher. The salary awarded will differ between schools; you should check the salary with the school before you apply for either salaried routes.
The employing school cannot pay you less than an unqualified teacher on point 1 of the scale, £20.909.
Wandle TSA meet the costs of the Roehampton training fee.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
Essential requirements for those applying for salaried places:
- 2.1 Honours UK degree preferred or an approved non-UK degree qualification. 2.2 degree considered when an applicant has a Masters degree or can demonstrate substantial (two years minimum) recent (within the last 18 months) Primary school experience within a UK state/mainstream Primary school.
- 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, English and Science
- Evidence at application of a high standard of written standard English.
- Successful completion of Skills Tests in Maths and English.

Alliance schools provide access for students with mobility impairments and have dedicated car parking allocated for the duration of school placements. Specific mobility issues for the individual schools will be addressed in collaboration with you.
