About the course
Spending four days a week in school and one day a week at the University of Hertfordshire this Masters level professional training programme introduces you to the requirements for teaching this subject to the 11-16 age range and leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. You will be introduced to the principles and theories of secondary teaching through both subject studies and a developing professional practice course. Training is undertaken in partnership with Hertfordshire University.
The programme is structured to allow you to develop the skills required by a teacher and to develop specific expertise for making a distinctive contribution to secondary practice.
We pride ourselves in providing a stimulating and supportive environment. We have a very effective partnership with the University at all levels. A wide range of teaching and learning methods are used. Tutor led sessions at University which will include lectures, seminars and workshops and where active participation is encouraged. In School trainees are supported by both a subject mentor and a professional mentor with weekly meetings to support the individual needs of the trainee. There are a wide range of opportunities for observation, training and complementary experiences within our consortium. You will be based for the majority of the time in a single, named school, but will also spend 6 weeks on a second placement to broaden school experience.
Recommendation for QTS is based on continuing assessment of practice.

This differs from our other course in the subject by being unsalaried but awarding a PGCE in addition to QTS.
Applications will be invited to visit one of the schools in the consortium to discuss their application. Candidates will be observed teaching a short lesson.
There will be an interview in the placement school and a Panel interview held at the Lead school, this will include a written test and an examination of qualifications.
How school placements work
All of the schools in our consortium offer training in the 11-16 age range, but in addition can offer experience of sixth form work. Schools are selected according to location and capacity to train in a particular subject. We have 10 schools in the consortium and trainees will experience 2 placements. The majority of time in their named training school and 6 weeks in the second school placement.

•Honours degree (2.2 or higher), awarded by a UK university or an overseas award recognised as equivalent by NARIC, with a minimum 50% content of the subject applied for. However, applicants whose degree does not meet this requirement should contact the University of Hertfordshire.
•GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and mathematics (Grade C or above)
•Original certificates will need to be shown at interview.
•All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency, equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band.
About the training provider
Working in Partnership with 10 Schools in South West Hertfordshire and North London and with the Advanced Teaching School Alliance we offer training in a diverse range of schools including a number of schools listed in the top 100 best achieving state schools in the country. We can also offer experiences in single sex, faith based and community schools. As a consortium we have worked together for many years and have trained well over 100 teachers in partnership with Hertfordshire University.
Our training is based on supporting trainees to develop their academic subject knowledge as well as their understanding of pedagogy in a supportive atmosphere tailoring experiences to the needs and prior experience of the individual.
You will be based at school for 4 days a week and spend one day of the week at university.
Training with disabilities and other needs
We are keen to support trainees with particular needs. There are some access issues on some of our sites; but we have supported trainees with hearing and sight impairment, dyslexia and long term illness. This is done in close association with and seeking the advice of Hertfordshire University.
